Authorities recover suspected murder weapon in Charlie Kirk assassination, FBI says

Authorities have recovered what they believe to be the firearm used to assassinate conservative activist Charlie Kirk, the FBI announced Thursday.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Robert Bohls made the announcement during a Thursday morning press conference at Utah Valley University.

The weapon "is a high powered bolt action rifle. That rifle was recovered in a wooded area where the shooter had fled. So the FBI laboratory will be analyzing this weapon. Investigators have also collected footwear, the impression of a palm print and forearm imprints for analysis," Bohls said.

"We are not sure how far he has gone," Bohls added about the assassin.

Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason confirmed that the shooter appeared to be "of college age," but he declined to offer more identifying details.

Mason said footage from the campus showed the shooter climbed to the roof of a building overlooking Kirk's event. He then jumped from the building and fled to a nearby neighborhood after the shooting.

Well, let’s let law enforcement do their jobs.

There seems to be a lot of frustration that we don’t have instant answers, and a quick apprehension of the gunman.

It’s good that they have some leads.Let’s see where this goes.

If he was a professional (I think he may have been), that would be part of the disinformation seeded along the way, but the Feds should be able to unravel it. Now that the adults are in charge.

At the press conference they indicated the gun found was bolt action, the shooter carried the weapon a significant distance from the shooting, people must have seen a guy carrying a rifle, unless he broke it down and put it in a backpack for some type of carrying case.

Sadly, every possible story, even the inconceivable, is going to spin off from any information. The conspiracy followers already have their mind mostly made up.

It took two months before they arrested James Earl Ray for shooting MLK. This is not a TV show that had to be wrapped up in an hour.

I think they’d immediately be able to determine if the rifle was just fired by checking the bolt. I also don’t think anyone would fire another gun there and drop it as a decoy.

I’m thinking that thirty ought is the weapon.

“I doubt thats the murder weapon, even if it is, thats Far, far too neatly packaged and found.”

That was my first thought.

However, maybe investigators have video evidence of the suspect with the rifle coming onto campus or leaving campus.

I'm sure the FBI has evaluated the old decoy gun trick.

Even if it was a planted decoy gun, it could lead to who planted it, which could lead to . . .

Mentally ill trans is redundant. Trans is mentally ill.

Interesting choice of weapon, automatically everyone thinks AR-15 but a bolt action Mauser 30-06 seems out of the norm.

In trained hands, a 30-06 would certainly do the job. But, we’ll have to stand by. Two folks taken in and both released so far. 😠🙏

You have narrowed it too much p, there are professional Pali/Arab colege students into their 40’s.

I disagree. A professional would not have hit him in the neck and almost miss.
He would have hit him in the center mass of the head and blown the back of his head off.
He would have measured the distance from the shooting position to the target and sited in his chosen weapon to accurately hit his target from that yardage. He did not. He almost missed him entirely.
