CONNECTICUT (WTNH) — In the ongoing fight to keep the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun in the state, Gov. Ned Lamont pitched a new plan for the state itself to become an investor in the franchise through the multibillion-dollar public employee pension funds it manages.

News 8 first reported high-level talks about the pension fund investment plan last week. The idea came about as the Sun’s owners, the Mohegan Tribe, are actively seeking either a buyer or investor for the team.

I say go for it, man. And why not invest in another Kamala Harris presidential campaign while you’re at it.

This is hilarious. CT taxpayers have to subsidize a team in a league that is subsidized by the NBA's owners and players. This is when you know DIE is on life support.

Mohegan Tribe owns of the first Indian casinos, are worth billions. They are more solvent than the State of Connecticut and its employee pension funds.

Investing Ct pension funds into a money loser like the WNBA is throwing good money after bad. Typical liberal move.

That’s clearly a DEI team if I ever heard one. A women’s basketball team that is already highly subsidized by the NBA that needs taxpayers paying for empty seats in a deep blue state. Likely a payoff from the state to the arena owner too, and along with that mess are union vendors, parking lot owners and that sort of thing.

Jeez… I guess this is another ‘RAT governor who doesn’t understand what fiduciary duty means. Oh well, it’s only other people’s money.

Nope.

I hear he’s also a fan of Pickleball, combat frisbee and bouncing quarters.

They’re next on his list.

Best post of the thread—and best summary of Lamont I have seen.

The net present value of the Connecticut Sun is way below zero.

So: the Mohegan tribe is trying to dump a money losing investment and the gov wants the state employees’ pension fund to pick up the money losing liability.

How about asking state employees if this is how they want their pensions handled? Or even better: shift the state directed pension plan into a thrift savings plan with individual ownersip rights and a range of self-directed options. Put the team on a list of money losing options in which people can ‘invest” as a long term speculation, as long as it is clearly characterized.
