Trump now realizes that he can't manage an end to the war. It's out of his hands. “the responsibility for the war and for dealing with Putin into the hands of the Europeans”

Where it belongs. Of course, their track record for preventing WWs and dragging the US into it is not great. This case seems no different.

The professor is right that there can be no solution but on the battlefield. Bad situation.

Trump now realizes that he can't manage an end to the war. It's out of his hands.

Problem with Mearsheimer is he refuses to consider that Russia could have imperial ambitions and that the invasion’s objective could be territorial and not "defensive".

On the eve of the invasion, Putin explicitly argued that Ukraine never had “real statehood,” and said it was an integral part of Russia’s “own history, culture, spiritual space.” After the invasion, he went on to compare himself to the 18th century Tsar, Peter the Great, and to declare that Russia was simply reclaiming its territory.

This will probably end up at a stalemate. Hopefully the killing will end.

This professor doesn’t have TDS if that’s what you’re getting at.

John Mearsheimer also confidently assured us that Russia would not invade Ukraine under any circumstances, that Ukraine would capitulate quickly, with popular support, when they did, and that admitting Sweden and Finland into NATO would immediately result in full war between Russia and NATO.

He’s 77, and past his sell by date. He is now driven by emotional bias, rather than objective analysis.

The real problem is for zelensky. Once the war ends, people will want to assess why it was fought in the first place. The answer, of course, was endless money and NATO’s experiment with controlling all Ukrainians with a government app, etc.

Zelensky will probably be taken out by his own military if the war continues badly, which it is, but will probably be taken out by AZOV remnants if he does end the war. Who knows what happens to Kolomoisky.

That said, the war will end inevitably because Ukraine is almost out of men. All they have are drones and a little bit of armor.

“This war will continue for another 5 years.”

I don’t think so. No one is going to supply the only thing that could save Ukraine and stop Russia, many thousands of foot soldiers. Every time Ukraine steadies the line in one place, another area is left undefended.

That wasn’t the case until lately. Wars of attrition can last a long time, but once an army is attritted beyond a certain point, collapse happens quickly.

is pushing the responsibility for the war and for dealing with Putin onto the ha into onto into the hands of the Europeans uh and the Ukrainians who again are working very closely together.

And this is wrong because?

Trump tried his best to end the war. The warring parties, and the Euros, want it to go on, particularly if the US is funding it.

But the US funding is over. If the Euros want to fight Russia using Ukraine as their proxy, they're welcome to finance the fight.

Trump now realizes that he can't manage an end to the war.

It is not immediately apparent just who made that statement, but I am not certain that was ever Trump's goal.

It seems more likely Trump offered, whether spoken or not, to act as a mediator and not a "manager". I,e, he wishes to help each party develop its own solution to end the dispute.

Mediators are often successful when the parties to a dispute make seemingly harsh, opposite claims. The mediator helps each of the parties understand and deal with the realities of their respective position.

Of course, if one or all of the parties is irrational, as the good professor surmises, then there is not much a mediator can do.

But even with rational, thinking parties there is no basis for blaming a mediator who is qualified to serve as such, as Trump is in this instance, if the effort fails.

Wars of attrition can last a long time, but once an army is attritted beyond a certain point, collapse happens quickly.

then it turns into an unconventional or guerrilla war, waged by whatever remains of rump-Ukraine.

You don't think the UK, EU and Deep State DC will simply let their proxy surrender, do you?

“Problem with Mearsheimer is he refuses to consider that Russia could have imperial ambitions and that the invasion’s objective could be territorial and not “defensive”.”

Russia’s possible or probable imperial ambitions are well known but irrelevant to what’s happening on the ground now. More ground troops are the only way to stop Putin. Somebody has fire all those fancy weapons, which are in short supply as well.
