Zelenskyy rejects formally ceding Ukrainian territory, says Kyiv must be part of any negotiations

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy dismissed Saturday the planned summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, warning that any peace deal excluding Kyiv would lead to “dead solutions.”

The Trump-Putin meeting, scheduled for Friday in Alaska, is seen as a potential breakthrough in the more than three-year war.

Trump had previously agreed to meet with Putin even if the Russian leader would not meet with Zelenskyy, stoking fears Ukraine could be sidelined in efforts to stop the continent’s biggest conflict since World War II.

In a statement posted to Telegram, Zelenskyy said Ukraine’s territorial integrity, enshrined in the constitution, must be non-negotiable and emphasized that lasting peace must include Ukraine’s voice at the table.

Zelenskyy said Ukraine “will not give Russia any awards for what it has done” and that “Ukrainians will not give their land to the occupier.”

Touching on Ukrainian anxieties that a direct meeting between Putin and Trump could marginalize Kyiv and European interests, Zelenskyy said: “Any decisions that are without Ukraine are at the same time decisions against peace. They will not bring anything. These are dead decisions. They will never work.”

The big question is how much of the Ukraine the Russians will be allowed to keep.

Peace would mean an end to Zelenskyy’s revenue stream, and likely an end to his political career.

Neither Zelenskyy nor Putin seem to care that people are dying.

That reply from Z is unfortunate, but not surprising.
He’s been saying this all along, that he didn’t want to give up any Ukraine territory. There may be good reasons he would reconsider that position.

“Dead solutions” is an interesting turn of phrase for a combatant in a land war.

The usual Zelensky sabotage. He has never been serious and that is because he hasn’t been totally cut off.

The thing that keeps this war going is the knowledge that Zeepers will turn on Trump and accuse him of another Baghdad if he surrenders Z, Ukraine and the globohomos that supported this whole fraud to a fate they all deserve.

Yes, he needs to go “all in”. As long as it’s not with America’s money.

The very first report of what took place in the Witkoff meeting said very carefully that the US proposed that Russia de facto kept the territories up to the current line of combat. It said this with such care so that Zelensky would not have to formally give that territory to Russia.

The initial phrasing was that it would be a de facto reality that it is Russian territory and formalities would not be revisited for 50 years. This would also be the time frame for any consideration of NATO membership. The idea was to avoid the issues that could not be settled.

As for the end of the war ending Zelensky’s political power, one should recognize that this territory being Russian eliminates many pro-russia votes in Ukraine elections. Zelensky might not lose elections. The pro Russia candidates who were winning Ukraine elections prior to 2014 we’re doing so with the votes from those pro Russia oblasts. Those oblasts would no longer vote.

OF COURSE Ukraine MUST be part of any negotiations. They are not going to merely drift away by U.S.-Russian negotiations, the way the Afghan government did after isolated U.S.-Taliban negotiations.

"formally ceding"

This looks like it's headed for a solution similar to Korea.

I have trouble believing the EU wants this war to go on and on...

Remembering back..."Z" has a plan. If there is a peace, "Z" can apply for NATO membership and probably get it (according to him). Then all he has to do is start a skirmish and NATO surrounds Russia. I remember Zelensky talking about this. Wonder if it's still around.

If Russia is allowed to keep most of the territorial gains, any “peace” will be temporary and Russia will resume the war at its convenience down the road. Ukraine, Finland, Poland, Lithuania all understand this.
