Public sours on Washington, loses hope for quick NATO accession
LONDON — Most Ukrainians now favor ending the war with Russia through negotiations, as support for fighting until victory has dropped sharply since the early days of the conflict. Although their hopes for joining NATO and the European Union have faded and approval of U.S. leadership has plummeted, Ukrainians still see the EU, U.K. and U.S. as key to ending the war. Yet, most doubt that will happen anytime soon.
More than three years into the war, Ukrainians’ support for continuing to fight until victory has hit a new low. In Gallup’s most recent poll of Ukraine — conducted in early July — 69% say they favor a negotiated end to the war as soon as possible, compared with 24% who support continuing to fight until victory.
This marks a nearly complete reversal from public opinion in 2022, when 73% favored Ukraine fighting until victory and 22% preferred that Ukraine seek a negotiated end as soon as possible.
Support for the war effort has declined steadily across all segments of the Ukrainian population, regardless of region or demographic group. This shift comes as diplomatic efforts gain new traction. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signaled readiness for direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, proposing renewed negotiations, while U.S. President Donald Trump is attempting to pressure the Kremlin with the threat of sanctions.

Ukraine only lose more territory and lives by continuing the war.
It's not negotiations that will end the war now. It will be surrender.
I doubt that the public there changed their view overnight...more like Gallop changed their story due to being told to change it, possibly to clear the way for dumping Zelensky.
Mucusmaxillary ain’t gonna like this.
Yup, Russians controls less of Ukraine now then they did at the start of Putin's invasion, and their advance is glacial, but its over. Okay
While most Ukrainians are ready to see the fighting end, few expect it to happen soon. Ukrainians see key roles for the EU, U.K. and U.S. to play in bringing the war to an end, even though public approval of Washington has cratered.
I have noticed Russia focus now is on droning apartment buildings in Kyiv. May be why the Ukes are giving up on winning the war. War is too close to home for Ukes.
“...Public sours on Washington...”
Even though the USA pays for all their salaries and pensions. What total ingrates. /spit
That usually happens when you run out of military-aged men.
Ukraine is not going to surrender.
I don't think Putin is serious about stopping the war.
He's stalling because he thinks he has the upper hand.
And he's trying to stop Trump from doing more to help Ukraine.
Their shock and awe strategy to invade Ukraine was somewhat effective.
They're barely making any gains in the current war of attrition.
Putin’s main goal is the destruction of Ukraine’s military. 1.8mm dead, untold numbers wounded, he’s doing pretty well.
He's not stalling. He's got no need to change Russia's stated aims, because Russia does indeed have the upper hand.
And he's trying to stop Trump from doing more to help Ukraine.
The ball is in Trump's court, not the other way around. Nothing will help Ukraine, save the introduction of hundreds of thousands of NATO troops. Everyone knows that. Trump is looking for a face-saving way out of this disaster, which he constantly calls "Joe Biden's war." Only a fool believes Trump wants to go deeper into it.
Thanks for posting Putin's demand for ending his invasion; Ukrainian complete surrender.
Is this the act of a Donald Trump who wants to go further into proxy-war with Russia?
I haven't seen any evidence that Putin has changed his mind.
So it's probably a waste of Trump's time to meet with Putin unless Steve Witkoff has already met with him and the conditions to end the war are accepted by Ukrainians.
BUT most Ukrainians (3/4) are against Putin's "peace" plan.
Russia's conditional peace plan, which, among other things, includes a significant reduction in Ukraine's army, refusal from NATO membership and transfer of territories controlled by Ukraine under Russian control, is categorically rejected by 76% of Ukrainians, while 17% may agree to Russia's demands, according to the results of a survey conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) from July 23 to August 4, 2025.
Suing for peace” means to officially ask for an end to fighting, usually by a nation or group that is losing a conflict. It implies a formal request for peace negotiations, often when a party recognizes they are unlikely to achieve victory through continued warfare.
It would be more like an armistice, an agreement made by opposing sides in a war to stop fighting for a certain time; a truce.
