Man dies after being pulled into MRI machine by metal necklace he was wearing

A man has died after getting sucked into an MRI machine.

The accident occurred on July 16 at the Nassau Open MRI in Westbury, New York, according to a press release from the Nassau County Police Department in Long Island.

Officers responded to a 911 call at around 4:30 p.m. at the MRI center, which provides diagnostic radiology services.

"Upon arrival, officers were informed that a male, 61, entered an unauthorized Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) room while the scan was in progress," the release stated.

"The male victim was wearing a large metallic chain around his neck, causing him to be drawn into the machine, which resulted in a medical episode."

The man was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries the next day, on July 17.

The investigation is ongoing, according to the police department.

Nassau Open MRI states on its website that anything metallic should be removed prior to an MRI, including hearing aids, partial plates, dentures, jewelry and hair pins.

On a web page detailing the benefits and risks of MRIs, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notes that "the strong, static magnetic field will attract magnetic objects (from small items such as keys and cell phones, to large, heavy items such as oxygen tanks and floor buffers) and may cause damage to the scanner or injury to the patient or medical professionals if those objects become projectiles."

"Careful screening of people and objects entering the MR environment is critical to ensure nothing enters the magnet area that may become a projectile."

Somewhat overlooked fact is that it does not matter if there is a scan in progress, due to the fact that it costs about $60k to shut down and power backup an MRI. The magnets are always on.

Ive had an MRI after having two hip replacements. Pure titanium is non-magnetic.

“This guy barged in. Prob high or something”

His wife was getting an MRI and couldn’t get up off the table so she asked the tech to bring her husband in.

The tech was either negligent, or the guy lied, or he barged in

I know.

It is a pity.

Because her going into emotional turmoil would only serve to make you ignore her.

There is no payoff in it.

Before I retired I worked in the metal working industry. I have had numerous MRIs and each time I had to have my eyes x-rayed beforehand to make sure I didn’t have any metal particles in them.

The worse that ever happened was I farted in the MRI after entering the machine and beginning the scan…..🤢

According to the article, it wasn’t the lady’s first MRI, and her husband had been there before with her. You would think they would “know the ropes” about MRI machines by the second go-round, and dress appropriately.

Well it’s a quote. They should have used (sic). My guess is the cop wrote it up wrong or the nurse told him wrong.

I didn’t realize MRIs were that dangerous. Do they do any kind of body check with a hand held metal detector or do people walk through a metal detector prior to entering?

Horrible. So sorry for this man...

When I read the article at the top, I knew some information was missing because the techs are supposed to walk you to the MRI room.

I’ve had many MRIs with many more to come. Yet, I still worry because, on busy days, some techs will rush you.

Sure enough, the linked article in post #59 says the tech let the man into the room to help his wife off the table.

The techs are supposed to help you. They’re not supposed to bring a family member into the room.

This was 100% the fault of the techs and the facility.

I presume he was choked to death.

Ahem. Our hospital's legal department prefers the term "medical episode."
