The Dems often like to frame bills with titles like "Save The Puppies Act" so they can accuse Republicans of hating puppies when the vote divides along party lines, but Republicans weren't trying to frame anything here.
160 Democrats simply didn't like the idea of deporting foreign nationals with DUIs.
The name of the bill is literally the "Protect Our Communities from DUIs Act."
H.R. 875 is named after three victims of drunk driving. Jeremy and Angel Seay, Alabama newlyweds who were killed by a drunk illegal alien. Sergeant Brandon Mendoza was likewise killed in Mesa, Arizona, in 2014 by a drunk illegal.
Under the Biden admin, illegals were allowed to drive without valid licenses, insurance, or registration. If they got into an accident while drunk, they were usually released. Those who were deported often returned multiple times and faced no penalties.
The stories are everywhere.
H.R. 875 reads:
To amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to provide that aliens who have been convicted of or who have committed an offense for driving while intoxicated or impaired are inadmissible and deportable.
That's it. The bill is just over two pages long. All it does is allow foreigners to be deported or denied entry to the U.S. after they have been convicted of or admitted to drunk driving.
160 Democrats voted AGAINST that. You can see their names here.

I hate to say this. But. Hopefully a drunk illegal will run over and kill these Dems. Sorry God.
Usually its everybody else that reaps what they sow.
The issue is not “foreigners” per se, but ILLEGAL ALIENS.
The Lying Leftist Press always obfuscates the issue.
The only thing that wakes these idiots up is getting personally bit on the rump by what they are protecting.
Barbara Boxer getting mugged comes to mind.
Anything short of that won’t penatrate their thick ass heads.
Deporting those with Green Cards for minor violations might be unwise...even unfair. Deporting *any* other alien for *any* violation...no matter how minor...is 100% OK with me!
I listened to MSNBC Lawrence O’Donnell last night and he was talking about the BBB and how it would ‘Cancel Medicaid for millions of PEOPLE...”
He said this over and over, never once saying that those ‘millions of PEOPLE’ were illegal aliens. He said it in the context of implying that it would cancel Medicaid for millions of AMERICANS, the sorry bastard. Of all the TV liars on ABCNNBCBS he is the absolute most despicable man on TV..............................
Here in Florida, a DUI is a damn serious violation. It will cost you at least $10-12k the FIRST time...................
Wouldn’t a green card holder be eligible for deportaion if convicted of DUI? Certainly DWI.
The only question is “this wasn’t already the law?”
DFDD
Democrats for Drunk Drivers.
We dont need a separate deportation bill for each politically unpopular offense.
Dems wouldn’t vote for a bill that requires deportation for illegals that raped their mothers if Trump would get credit of signing it.
True.
They have no sense................
I used to think that about Hollywood, that if some important Hollywood person was ever killed by an illegal, they’d all finally wake up. Until the guy who directed the Christmas Story movie and his son were killed by an illegal alien drunk driver. Hollywood still didn’t care. They were just as much in favor of illegals as ever.
And sometimes we see on the news where a young person is killed by an illegal and their parent is quoted as saying that we mustn’t judge all illegals by that one, that we must still have open borders, etc. Some people will just not be awakened, no matter what.
There are certain rules one must follow upon receiving a green card.Im not sure if a dui would terminate the green card holders status but it should.I think it’s probasionary.
An example of a drunk driving conviction I might be will to forgive: a guy's stopped for drunk driving. He didn't hurt anyone. Very soon after the arrest he attends his first AA meeting. Five years later, still sober (provably so),he applies for citizenship.
Of course there are some drunk driving arrests that I *wouldn't* be willing to forgive.
These 160 Democrats need to be forced to pay the bills for damages and injuries caused by the illegal aliens they’re protecting.
An immigrant applying for "permanent lawful residency" must not have a criminal record. DUI is certainly a criminal record, seemingly a moot point where there is a homicide involved. Yet these Dems would find it acceptable that immigrants not entitled to advance in the citizenship process be allowed to remain in the country.
One wonders for what purpose?
The bill passed the House, and it will be interesting to see how the Senate views the bill.
Perhaps, since the USSC ruled more than 20 years ago that a simple DUI is not a "crime of violence", the bill should have more effectively specified a DUI that "causes physical damage, grievous bodily harm, or death to others" to elevate the offense to aggravated felony status?
I’m sorry for your loss of your niece.I can’t imagine.
