LOS ANGELES (AP) — Around 300 National Guard troops arrived in Los Angeles early Sunday on orders from President Donald Trump, staging outside a federal complex that remained largely quiet and without major protests following two days of clashes with immigration authorities.
The deployment appeared to be the first time in decades that a state’s national guard was activated without a request from its governor, a significant escalation against those who have sought to hinder the administration’s mass deportation efforts.
On Sunday morning, some of the troops were stationed outside the Metropolitan Detention Center in downtown Los Angeles, dressed in tactical gear and holding long guns in front of armored vehicles.
A small number of protesters gathered at the scene, along with Rep. Maxine Waters, a Democrat, who demanded entry to the facility. Tear gas canisters, apparently left over from previous confrontations, littered the street, triggering coughing fits among some demonstrators.
The arrival of the National Guard followed two days of protests that began Friday in downtown Los Angeles before spreading on Saturday to Paramount, a heavily Latino city south of the city, and neighboring Compton.
As federal agents set up a staging area Saturday near a Home Depot in Paramount, demonstrators attempted to block Border Patrol vehicles, with some hurling rocks and chunks of cement. In response, agents in riot gear unleashed tear gas, flash-bang explosives and pepper balls.
Tensions were high after a series of sweeps by immigration authorities the previous day, as the weeklong tally of immigrant arrests in the city climbed above 100. A prominent union leader was arrested while protesting and accused of impeding law enforcement.
The deployment of the National Guard came over the objections of Gov. Gavin Newsom, who accused Trump of a “complete overreaction” designed to create a spectacle of force.

Good on CNN for identifying the current riot I just witnessed on FOX as being fake, AI generated........../not
Well obviously the demonstrators are sleeping in and sleeping it off. And the fact that there is appropriate force there now, they don’t want to have a confrontation. AP wants to make it sound like it’s no big deal
You must be kidding

Commies all tuckered out? Keeping the Sabbath?
A demonstration of how comfortable the corporate gaslight press is of lying.
The AP is just flat out lying.
“Trump has framed the move as a necessary response to Newsom’s and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass’s failure to swiftly contain the unrest.”
Ya. Ok Jake. Check this.
I am certain that Trump consulted legal and military authorities on the proper procedure here.
You’ll be disappointed soon to realize he is just not a dictator
Some kaffeyahs and Pali flags in the crowd.
That’s not what I’m seeing on my television machine...
The media is just plain outright filth.
“A small number of protesters gathered at the scene, along with Rep. Maxine Waters, a Democrat”
A small number of protesters gathered at the scene, along with Rep. Maxine Waters, a DEMONCRAT
There, fixed it
They’re cages aren’t getting any bigger.
I have long awaited the day for the media liars to be hauled before military tribunals, found guilty and hung in front of the courthouse.
It would be a great success if the rioters took cover for awhile. It would mean Trump restored peace to the city by decisive action.
The violent ones are still sleeping off last night.
Where as bass and gruesome Newsom were going to try to let them burn the parts of the city they missed in January.
Of course AP etc are going to make it look like nothing has ever happened or will ever happen in downtown LA, and that Trump is delusional.
It's too bad there's no such thing as gagging the press in times of national emergency when all it does is fan the flames of insurrection and destruction and provide aid and comfort to the enemy within our borders.
The AP can’t even figure out cause and effect. It’s quiet because the National Guard showed up.
I’ve never understood this mania for ‘call and response’ chanting. What to they think it accomplishes?
It seems childish and silly.
