Republicans stick with Trump in wake of explosive clash with Musk

Allies of the two men expressed hope they would make peace, or at least ease the tensions that broke out Thursday.

Republicans appeared to rally to President Donald Trump’s side Friday as his feud with Elon Musk continued to consume the party, disrupting the president’s legislative agenda at a key moment.

While many expressed hope that the two would reconcile, they also made clear they continue to regard Trump as the leader of the party and defended the “big, beautiful bill” central to a dramatic blow-up Thursday between the two men. Musk this week had urged lawmakers to kill it.

“I don’t argue with [Musk] about how to build rockets, and I wish he wouldn’t argue with me about how to craft legislation and pass it,” House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) said in a CNBC interview, where he nonetheless praised both men as “titans.” “I hope it all resolves today.”

In interviews with reporters Friday morning, Trump sought to shift focus to his signature tax and immigration bill, which is pending in the Senate. Still, he was not done criticizing Musk, in one interview calling him “the man who has lost his mind.”

“I’m not even thinking about Elon. He’s got a problem. The poor guy’s got a problem,” Trump told CNN on Friday morning, adding that he would not “be speaking to [Musk] for a while, I guess, but I wish him well.”

Thursday’s clash escalated quickly and left some Republicans feeling torn between two men they have hailed as political revolutionaries in their own rights. Trump said that Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, had gone “CRAZY” and threatened to cancel federal contracts for his companies, while Musk claimed he was the only reason Trump won the 2024 election and suggested that Trump should be...

Musk, his resuscitation of the First Amendment and the DOGE farce are no longer needed by Johnson, Thune, Graham and Trump. It makes me heartsick.

It’s like in Butch Cassidy, when the guys start chasing them. They split up and Paul Newman watches what they do. They re join and continue on butch’s trail. He says, “why don’t they follow those guys!?”

Musk has a bit of a history of online melt downs. He should take some time off and relax.

Good. He can break the high power lines in the towers and cause all the Teslas to be starved for electric charges.

Debt to GDP makes me heartsick.

Seeing Musk, Paul, and the guy from Wisconsin derail the tax bill so the 2015 rate increase becomes permanent again gives me heartburn.

The Democrats would capitalize that to reward blue state taxpayers and punish the rich, which really means recession for what is left of the middle class and involuntary redistribution of their wealth to the have not, ne'er do wells.

Yes in its present form it gets 51

Musk can’t get what he wants if he changes it substantially. He will lose the votes. Some want stand alone bills for this and that but we don’t have the 60 needed to pass them.

We can pass the Big Beautiful Bill with 51 and get most of what we want. It’s politics.

How do you get 51 people to agree on anything? And the House is even worse??

My family of five can't even agree on what we want for dinner...and there are only two choices....this or that.

Musk has absolutely nothing to do with the BBB. His DOGE cuts are done by rescission.
