Meet Thomas Fugate: 22 year old ex-gardener and grocery store assistant to lead $18 million anti terror team
Financial times ^ | 5th June 2025 | Hannah Allen

When Thomas Fugate graduated from college last year with a degree in politics, he celebrated in a social media post about the exciting opportunities that lay beyond campus life in Texas. “Onward and upward!” he wrote, with an emoji of a rocket shooting into space.

His career blastoff came quickly. A year after graduation, the 22-year-old with no apparent national security expertise is now a Department of Homeland Security official overseeing the government’s main hub for terrorism prevention, including an $18 million grant program intended to help communities combat violent extremism.

The White House appointed Fugate, a former Trump campaign worker who interned at the hard-right Heritage Foundation, to a Homeland Security role that was expanded to include the Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships. Known as CP3, the office has led nationwide efforts to prevent hate-fueled attacks, school shootings and other forms of targeted violence.

Fugate’s appointment is the latest shock for an office that has been decimated since President Donald Trump returned to the White House and began remaking national security to give it a laser focus on immigration.

News of the appointment has trickled out in recent weeks, raising alarm among counterterrorism researchers and nonprofit groups funded by CP3. Several said they turned to LinkedIn for intel on Fugate — an unknown in their field — and were stunned to see a photo of “a college kid” with a flag pin on his lapel posing with a sharply arched eyebrow. No threat prevention experience is listed in his employment history.

These are the same folks for whom most of these shooters were already on the radar?

Yes, I would imagine that when you have a history of incompetence, the arrival of young blood with a mission to fire incompetents is cause for alarm.

I’ve said for a long time that the people at the top need to be decisive people who are loyal and who share the ideology.

The people down from the top who will make and implement policy need to have expertise. The person at the top does not necessarily need to have the expertise. They just need to make sure everything moves in the right direction, and they need to ruthlessly expel anyone who isn’t thinking right.

Hire a plumber from Peoria. Hire a gardener. Doesn’t matter. If they want to push things in the right direction, they may be a good choice.

He impressed somebody when he worked for the campaign. The article seems to imply that he didn’t get there by using connections.
Good to see a young man with ambition working hard. A small 18 million dollar program is a good place to see how he performs further.

What type of job did they expect him to have at the age of 17?

Sounds like he worked his way through college. If he had been on a student visa and was a campus agitator they’d be singing his praises

He was a gardener and worked in a grocery store — and people have a problem with that?

Did Biden or Obama have actual jobs before jumping in to ruin our country?

Only 22? He may have great credentials, but as far as real life experience, how much does he have. I hope he has someone looking over his shoulder.

All the talk about “the best people” was nonsense. The Trump team hires just like every administration does - they hire people from their own little clique.

I don’t blame this young man for jumping at the opportunity, but he does not have the background or qualifications for this position.

"Good to see a young man with ambition working hard. A small 18 million dollar program is a good place to see how he performs further."

Exactly. The military routinely has young platoon leaders with little more than a college degree sign for at least $18M in equipment and the direct responsibility for the health, morale and welfare of a platoon's worth of soldiers.

There should be no surprise that a go-getter who has demonstrated his loyalty and organizational abilities in the campaign be given a post in the administration.

Look at the bald lipsticked thief that Bidet hired to represent the US for nuclear waste in an attempt to EMBARRASS America and also Booty Juice, who was chest feeding and on maternity leave for much of his ‘term’.

Of course he is not qualified, but that is precisely the point. To break the deep state, you have to terminate the revolving door of the deep state that self perpetuates itself.

We all agree that guy was weird. No one here liked Biden’s picks.

The bald lipsticked thief was actually qualified for his position. He was probably the most qualified of all of Biden’s appointees.

Yet he was a total and complete failure because his weird twisted mental disorder overrode his career trajectory and his life.
