Trump calls for scrapping debt limit
The Hill ^ | 06/04/25 2:18 PM ET | by Alex Gangitano

President Trump on Wednesday doubled down on calls to scrap the nation’s debt ceiling, pressing for bipartisan action to abolish it and finding common ground with Democrat Sen. Elizabeth Warren (Mass.).

“I am very pleased to announce that, after all of these years, I agree with Senator Elizabeth Warren on SOMETHING. The Debt Limit should be entirely scrapped to prevent an Economic catastrophe. It is too devastating to be put in the hands of political people that may want to use it despite the horrendous effect it could have on our Country and, indirectly, even the World. As to Senator Warren’s second statement on the $4 Trillion Dollars, I like that also, but it would have to be done over a period of time, as short as possible. Let’s get together, Republican and Democrat, and DO THIS!” Trump said on Truth Social.

He shared Warren’s post on the social platform X from Friday, when she agreed with Trump that the debt limit “should be scrapped” and called for a bipartisan bill to “get rid of it forever.”

Warren had posted Trump’s comments on X, during which he noted that the progressive senator has long supported abolishing the debt limit in the past. He said he “always agreed with her” on the matter, adding that he hasn’t spoken to her personally about it.

Well then Rand can now complain that Trump wants infinite debt in the bill. The debt ceiling is stupid and distracts from other things congress should be doing. They always end up raising it but they can chew up scenery every time it comes up and push everything else aside. It’s canned drama.

Rush said pretty much the same thing regarding the debt.

The limit is a useless tool.

A balanced budget would be a different matter.

It’s worrying he says nicce things about that Warren and is arguing with Rand

He must be losing it. I know he’s under a lot of pressure but still..

Let’s hope Paul can defeat this nonsense in the United States Senate!

The debt limit is the only thing preventing us from having $29 trillion in national debt. Oh, wait... Never mind.

You got it backwards. Rand fights with Trump. He’s still pissed Trump crushed him in a debate 9 years ago.

It probably stops you having double that

Because that’s what happens with this ‘beautiful’ bill

And then you’d be entering wheelbarrow territory with regards to inflation

There should NEVER be a debt. Passing a law that eliminates the debt I’d agree with...not the debt ceiling.

If you don’t have the funds coming in then you don’t spend more than you have. Balanced budget... That won’t work either... You need more $$ these idiots will just tax more.

You need to write laws that eliminate all the government BS which includes ALL social programs and growth in any federal, state or local government can only increase budgets based on population and money coming in.

The debt limit does nothing but allow showboating by politicians.

It has, of course, never worked - as your /s tag rightfully implies.

But at least it brings some attention to a very serious problem. For that reason alone it must stay.

Kinda like having a public access camera on a street where people are speeding. Maybe that camera won’t slow anyone down. But it sure can’t hurt.

Trump loves debt.

He will tell you that 1/2 of the debt is owed to the government, so it is a wash.

He grew his “empire” on debt.

This is nothing new.

“We need to keep the debt limit because it’s worked so well up till now.”

It has.

The debt would be much closer to 100T without it. It causes them to fight and slow down.

We WANT them to fight and slow down.

The debt limit is crucial. When they are fighting and slowing down they aren’t spending money.

Any chance the DOGE team will be allowed to see what (if anything) is in the Fort Knox repository?!?

Agreed, and it serves that function well.

The debt limit isn’t actually about limiting the debt in exactly the same way that car insurance isn’t about the car.

It’s human insurance, and it’s a congress limit.

When they are showboating they aren’t spending money. We should not put an end to the showboating otherwise we would be at 100T by know.

I couldn’t imagine an Obama presidency that didn’t have to stop and deal with the debt limit.

Obama alone is the proof that the debt limit is a fantastic tool that we need to keep. It forces congress to stop and engage in infighting, when they stop that means they stop spending money.

Note: They stop spending money. See? See.
