Trump formally asks Congress to claw back approved spending targeted by DOGE

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House on Tuesday officially asked Congress to claw back $9.4 billion in already approved spending, taking funding away from programs targeted by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency.

It’s a process known as “rescission,” which requires President Donald Trump to get approval from Congress to return money that had previously been appropriated. Trump’s aides say the funding cuts target programs that promote liberal ideologies.

The request, if it passes the House and Senate, would formally enshrine many of the spending cuts and freezes sought by DOGE. It comes at a time when Musk is extremely unhappy with the tax cut and spending plan making its way through Congress, calling it on Tuesday a “disgusting abomination” for increasing the federal deficit.

White House budget director Russ Vought said more rescission packages and other efforts to cut spending could follow if the current effort succeeds.

“We are certainly willing and able to send up additional packages if the congressional will is there,” Vought told reporters.

Here’s what to know about the rescissions request:

Will the rescissions make a dent in the national debt?

The request to Congress is unlikely to meaningfully change the troublesome increase in the U.S. national debt. Tax revenues have been insufficient to cover the growing costs of Social Security, Medicare and other programs. The Congressional Budget Office estimates the government is on track to spend roughly $7 trillion this year, with the rescission request equaling just 0.1% of that total.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters at Tuesday’s briefing that Vought — a “well-respected fiscal hawk,” she called him — would continue to cut spending, hinting that there could be additional efforts...

Pretty sure DOGE found way more than just 9.4 billion to cut. I dont think Elon would be so scathing if it was only 9.4 billion.

People have been asking for months when Trump would send a recission request.

About time.

If the vote fails the cuts cannot go through so they are doing a small test run and when Congress inevitably cannot get these small cuts down the administration will be going down a different path. Congress is so disfunctional and the judges are so corrupt. Democracy is on trial and I think it’s going to go away for a very, very long.time. Real decisions have to be made and it will take something 3 separate, equal and completely irrational adversarial branches cannot, more specifically, will not do.

Ah! Now we are talking to the real enemy and the real problem. Congress and its duplicitous shysters.

shyster /shī′stər/

noun

An unethical, unscrupulous practitioner, especially of law.

A trickish knave; one who carries on any business, especially legal business, in a mean and dishonest way.

Someone who acts in a disreputable, unethical, or unscrupulous way, especially in the practice of law and politics.

“Will the rescissions make a dent in the national debt?”

No. It should be $900 billion, a hundred times the meager sum of $9 billion extra the gummit spent only a few years ago.

It’s about time only because the House finished their work on the reconciliation bill 2 weeks ago. To have put that work aside to work on a 9 billion dollar recission bill would have been a misplaced priority.

It won’t pass. Trump will be forced to find other ways to cut so that Congress can cheer him on and complain at the same time. Totally useless.

I was hoping for a 9.4 trillion. The budget has got 5 trillion added to the debt ceiling.

somehow you’re blaming Trump? This is all on Congress. This 9B cut will not pass. You going to blame Trump when Collins and Murkowski say these cuts are too deep and Rand Paul says, “What we should need to do is cut 1T and if we just pass my penny plan we’ll be balanced”

I can only repeat the fact that reconciliation rules prevent cuts to discretionary spending, and almost all of the waste uncovered by Musk and his DOGE team are discretionary spending items. It’s not possible to include them in the reconciliation bill without a rules change in the Senate, and it’s unnecessary to do so anyway, as the cuts can be addressed through recission bills like the one just submitted as well as through the normal budget process.

I’m not sure why Musk is omitting such a big part of the story. Is he just uninformed or does he have some other agenda? I honestly don’t know, but he’s doing a dis-service to the base by mis-leading it. He deserves much credit for his work with DOGE, but that doesn’t give him a pass on mis-leading the public.

Musk is the perfect demonstration that business acumen doesn’t necessarily translate to political acumen or ability. A President Musk (yeah, I know he’s not an NBC, but if he were..) would be a disaster. Trump is a rare exception.

President Trump has had no public scheduel for the last 2 days. He is likely calling Senators, and trying to make deals.

I am with Rlin Musk as well. He is 25 times more successful in business than Trump. He is genius category. I value his opinions over other non-achievers and corrupt politicians.

He’s pissed that he only found 9 billion after losing hundreds of billions trying to find more. He currently disgruntled. Hopefully he’ll shake out of it.
