As the Trump administration cut billions of dollars in federal funding to scientific research, thousands of scientists in the U.S. lost their jobs or grants — and governments and universities around the world spotted an opportunity.
The “Canada Leads” program, launched in April, hopes to foster the next generation of innovators by bringing early-career biomedical researchers north of the border.
Aix-Marseille University in France started the “Safe Place for Science” program in March — pledging to “welcome” U.S.-based scientists who “may feel threatened or hindered in their research.”
Australia’s “Global Talent Attraction Program,” announced in April, promises competitive salaries and relocation packages.
“In response to what is happening in the U.S.,” said Anna-Maria Arabia, head of the Australian Academy of Sciences, “we see an unparalleled opportunity to attract some of the smartest minds here.”
Since World War II, the U.S. has invested huge amounts of money in scientific research conducted at independent universities and federal agencies. That funding helped the U.S. to become the world’s leading scientific power — and has led to the invention of cell phones and the internet as well as new ways to treat cancer, heart disease and strokes, noted Holden Thorp, editor-in-chief of the journal Science.
But today that system is being shaken.
Since President Donald Trump took office in January, his administration has pointed to what it calls waste and inefficiency in federal science spending and made major cuts to staff levels and grant funding at the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, NASA and other agencies, as well as slashing research dollars that flow to...

We don’t need the Covid type scientists
To: E. Pluribus Unum
I don’t think it’s the taxpayers responsibility to pay taxes in order for the government to pay out billions of dollars in grants for scientists at Universities or clinics. That’s what part of the schools tuition should be paying for. Our government has forgotten what their job is supposed to be and instead throwing money all over the world for their own enrichment.

"...thousands of scientists in the U.S. lost their jobs or grants"
We would LOVE to see a list of the degrees of these "scientists," what they were researching, titles of their research projects, what they proposed to receive grants. Here is a smattering of woke and useless crap these "professors" were probably doing. Good riddance! Replace them with engineering and true science people.
- University of Kansas: Center for Transgender Liberation
Description: A center focused on recruiting “scholar-activists” to combat “anti-trans bills” and advance a “theory and practice of transgender liberation,” aiming to “transform the academy” through advocacy.
Criticism: Critics argue it prioritizes ideological activism over objective scholarship, using public funds to promote a specific social agenda.
- University of Texas: "Measuring Racial Inequality" Course
Description: A mathematics course developing indices to calculate racial disparities and segregation, integrating social justice themes into math.
Criticism: Labeled as “math going woke,” critics claim it shifts focus from mathematical rigor to ideological advocacy, potentially diluting STEM standards. - Vanderbilt University: Center for Latin American, Caribbean, and Latinx Studies
Description: Emphasizes collaboration with DEI and Social Justice offices, with courses like “The Political Economy of Racism” and “Racial Domination, Racial Progress.”
Criticism: Seen as using federal funds to promote progressive ideologies rather than objective area studies, prioritizing activism over scholarship.
- University of Colorado–Boulder: Center for Asian Studies Symposium on Climate Justice
Description: Hosted sessions like applying a “feminist political ecology lens” to infrastructure and “Queering Environmental Relations between Cambodia and China,” examining environmental issues through gender and identity.
Criticism: Critics view these as niche, ideologically driven topics with questionable academic value, misusing National Resource Center (NRC) funding.
- Atlanta Global Studies Center: Social Justice in Arabic Language Teaching
Description: A workshop for K-20 Arabic teachers, hosted by Georgia Tech and Georgia State, encouraged incorporating social justice themes, with a rubric to assess students’ understanding.
Criticism: Argued to divert language education toward ideology, with funding from the NRC and Qatar Foundation International raising concerns about external influence.
- Stanford University: Jo Boaler’s Mathematics Education Research
Description: Professor Jo Boaler’s work on reforming math education emphasizes reasoning over memorization for equitable outcomes, contributing to California’s mathematics framework.
Criticism: Labeled “woke” by critics like Ted Cruz and Tucker Carlson, who claim it promotes progressive ideology over traditional methods, with accusations of misconduct dismissed by Stanford. - University of California, Berkeley: DEI-Focused Faculty Hiring
Description: Requires DEI statements for faculty hiring, assessing candidates’ commitment to diversity and inclusion as part of the evaluation process.
Criticism: Critics argue these statements act as ideological litmus tests, undermining academic freedom and prioritizing activism over merit. - University of Michigan: DEI Initiatives
Description: Invested $85 million in DEI programs (2016–2021), including training and administrative roles to address systemic racism and campus climate.
Criticism: Critics note declining satisfaction with campus climate (down 23.1% for faculty, 12.9% for staff, 10.7% for students), suggesting DEI efforts may foster division rather than unity. - Georgia Tech: STEM Education Research Grants
Description: Received federal grants for STEM education research, flagged by Sen. Ted Cruz as promoting “woke DEI” agendas, though specifics remain broad.
Criticism: Seen as part of a broader trend of federal funds supporting ideological projects, potentially influencing research agendas away from scientific neutrality. - Ohio State University: NRC Teacher-Training Sessions
Description: Hosted sessions like “What Makes K-pop? The Importance of K-pop Fandom” and “Japanese Popular Culture and Globalization,” funded by the NRC.
Criticism: Seen as frivolous and disconnected from policy-relevant regional analysis, diverting funds toward progressive cultural studies. - George Washington University: Institute for Middle East Studies
Description: An NRC-funded center criticized for biased programming that allegedly pushes left-wing activism hostile to U.S. interests.
Criticism: Critics argue it exemplifies how area studies centers have shifted from strategic analysis to ideological advocacy.

Only two names of actual scientists mentioned.
One is a “neuroscientist,” who’s applied for jobs in Canada and France.
The other is “studying how children develop race and gender stereotypes,” who says “I’m not sure of my next move.”

Safe to say that over the decades of $ from the U.S. government any cures that were found were squashed;as the customer base for the profitable maintenance drugs for anything kept the medical ball rolling. Sad,far to many who make the decisions do it for monetary gain as opposed to the original mission. I see it as another form of make - work with the majority of these programs. If they are of any real value the Universities with endowments would fund them.

They can have the ‘60 genders’ type ‘scientists’ too.
This might be a real blessing for our country.

Much of that research is garbage, paid for by our tax dollars. Let’s stop paying “scientists” to study whether coffee is killing us or if it’s a wonderful benefit, for the two-hundredth time.
