WASHINGTON, May 16 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump accused James Comey on Friday of calling for his assassination in a coded post on social media, rejecting the former FBI director's explanation that he was not aware of any violent connotation.
U.S. law enforcement officials are investigating an Instagram photo posted by Comey of the number 8647 formed by seashells with the comment, "Cool shell formation on my beach walk."

In U.S. slang, the number 86 can be used as a verb meaning to throw somebody out of a bar for being drunk or disorderly. Trump is the 47th president of the United States.
Some Trump supporters interpreted the message as a call to violently remove Trump from office, including through assassination.
"He knew exactly what that meant," Trump said in an interview with Fox News before leaving Abu Dhabi after a four-day Middle East trip.
"A child knows what that meant. If you're the FBI director and you don't know what that meant? That meant assassination. And it says it loud and clear," he said.
Comey, who was fired by Trump in 2017, took down the post after a backlash from Trump supporters.
"It never occurred to me. But I oppose violence of any kind, so I took the post down," he said.
Comey was not available for comment on Trump's accusation.
"He was hit so hard because people like me and they like what's happening with our country," Trump said in the interview excerpt. "And he's calling for the assassination of the president."
The "8647" and "8646" themes have been used as a political slogan and on T-shirts during the administrations of both Trump and his predecessor, Democratic President Joe Biden, the 46th U.S. president.

Comey was just ‘funning’ around.
He was being a Comeydian.
But he was just trying to get even with Trump for 86ing his career.
I see in the last sentence that they had to work in Biden, like this was ever a real thing while he was President...

If you didn’t know what the numbers meant, you would post it, and ask people for their opinion.
You wouldn’t just say it looked cool.
If you did know what it meant, you wouldn’t post it, or you would make some commentary about how you didn’t agree with it.
For someone supposedly intelligent enough to run a law enforcement agency that investigates and interrogates criminals, he sure is bad at acting innocent.

If I was writing a novel, the Saudi Crown Prince would worry that Comey was signaling another Trump assassination plot. He would worry that if they 86 Trump, that would cost him the most supportive President ever, trillions of dollars, and the chance to modernize his Kingdom.
And then the Prince would remember dealing with one very troublesome guy Jamal Ahmad Hamza Khashoggi.
And then he would remember Comey is always walking along alone in nature. People sometimes just -vanish- out there. Just ask David Paulides!
And then the Prince smiles slyly and summons his head of of his Intelligence Agency...
Should be disallowed access to any media pending investigation.

My friend and I got 86’d from a bar many years ago. I got a couple of black eyes and multiple bumps on the head and sore ribs. He got a dozen stitches to his head and concussion. My point is getting 86’d can be rather violent.

It's not Comey's weak and implausible interpretation that counts. It's what a delusional Trump-hating major leftist who might interpret the post as a signal to do awful things that counts.

This was an act by a mentally-stunted, narcissist moron with the maturity of a whiny 12-year-old brat.
