NJ Gov. Murphy blasts striking NJ Transit union workers amid commuter nightmare: ‘Mess of their own making’

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy ripped NJ Transit engineers for going on strike Friday — blasting their actions as a “slap in the face” to commuters and a “mess of their own making.”

The Democrat lashed out after roughly 400 rail engineers walked off the job after marathon contract talks stalled ahead of a midnight deadline, setting off the first strike to hit the major transit system in more than 40 years.

“It did not have to come to this,” Murphy told a news conference after the morning commuter rush got underway.

“A small handful of locomotive engineers have walked off the job and shut down our entire transit system,” he continued, adding that “we’re talking just under 400 engineers in a total workforce of about 12,000.”

There should be no government regulation of unions and union negotiations at all. If every employee wants to gang up and walk of the job, they should be free to do so—with the employer free to hire replacements.

End of story. End of problem.

Image from today’s Geller Report comes to mind. Newark airport worker wearing a kefiyah on the tarmac.

Of the 12,000 employees those 400 are the hardest to replace. Ticket takes, janitorial staff and even police can be more easily replaced than engineers. Good luck Murphy.

There should be no government regulation of unions and union negotiations at all.

The flip side of this is that public sector unions should be illegal.

A labor union is an abomination when it doesn't negotiate directly with the people who actually pay the workers.

Power outages and a lack of air traffic controllers have shut operations at Newark International this week. And now this Transit strike.

Is there anything New Jersey doesn't suck at?

Bingo. I’m not anti-union. But it’s not a level playing field. I don’t know about New Jersey, but many states have laws making it illegal to permanently replace striking workers.

Until that changes, the unions will have a huge and unfair advantage.

Stupid politicians. Doesn't matter if you have a million employees, the engineers are why all of those people have jobs!

Reminds me a bit of the air traffic controllers’ strike. I believe Reagan knew what to do.

Personally, I believe this sort of thing may demonstrate why it may be a bad idea to enable critical infrastructure jobs to be unionized.

Just thinking out loud.

Couple inputs on this.

1. I was a local union rep at a class 1 RR for 18 yrs. And I am anti-union. They only put forth their resources for those whom were underperforming, trouble makers, lacked discipline, et al. To me, it was a display of a communism culture on steroids. To example one fact, everyone made the same pay. Doesn’t matter education status, prior devolved skills, a toned up resumé. Seniority was all. A well developed, competent hire had to follow a high school graduate who got his job the day before someone who honed his trade. Oh, and btw, my company would not recognize any military. And I mean, time served, schooling, commendations. None nada. These things were non-negotiable for advancements and placements.

2. Transportation workers just cannot strike. (Pres Reagan) it takes years of negotiations to reach a point where the door opens for the possibility. And then forget it. Lawmakers will intervene to order workers back. Like...immediately. benn there a couple times.
