WARSAW, Poland (AP) – A massive fire that destroyed a large shopping center in Warsaw last year was the result of arson ordered by Russian intelligence services, Polish officials said Sunday on the eve of the one-year anniversary of the blaze.
The fire broke out May 12, 2024, in the Marywilska 44 shopping that housed some 1,400 shops and service points. Many of the vendors were from Vietnam, and it inflicted tragedy on many in Warsaw’s Vietnamese community.
“We now know for certain that the massive fire on Marywilska was the result of arson commissioned by Russian services,” Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on X. “The actions were coordinated by a person residing in Russia. Some of the perpetrators are already in custody, while the rest have been identified and are being sought. We will catch them all!”

Coincidences..... Tusk was with Macron, Merz and Starmer in Kyiv only yesterday, and today the investigation -- which already has some in custody -- is announced, alongside news of a possible Istanbul meeting.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, which closely monitors foreign fighters in Ukraine, approximately 2,960 mercenaries from Poland have arrived in Ukraine since the start of the conflict in 2022. This makes Poland the leading country in terms of mercenary numbers, but the figure is far below 60,000.
Other sources, including statements from Russian-aligned officials, have at times claimed higher numbers, such as “about 5,000 Polish mercenaries” on a specific front line. However, even these inflated figures do not approach 60,000.
Fact-checking organizations and independent monitors have repeatedly debunked claims of tens of thousands of Polish soldiers or mercenaries fighting in Ukraine. These narratives are identified as pro-Kremlin disinformation, intended to exaggerate foreign involvement and casualties.
Don’t use the fake Russian word for foreign volunteers, Ukraine doesn’t have any mercenary groups fighting for them but they do have foreign volunteers in their armed forces.
