A Lewis and Clark statue featuring Sacagawea (also spelled Sacajawea), a famous Native American woman, was taken down in Charlottesville, Virginia, making it the third statue to be taken down in the city.

The statue is of two White men – Meriwether Lewis and William Clark – and Sacagawea, who was depicted tracking, according to historians. Those against the statue have said Sacagawea appears to be cowering, according to The Daily Progress newspaper.

“It was a very offensive statue, and not only did it delineate me as a Native American, it delineated our women and their role in society,” said Rose Abrahamson, a Native American woman, in a video obtained by CNN affiliate WVIR-TV of a Charlottesville City Council emergency meeting.

The statue was promptly removed following the removal of Confederate statues featuring Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson.

In video of the statue’s removal, crowds are seen cheering as the bronze sculpture was hoisted off the base and loaded onto a flatbed truck.

The idea to create the Lewis-Clark-Sacagawea statue began in 1912, when “pleas from prominent citizens” led University of Virginia donor Paul Goodloe McIntire to fund the creation of the statue. Charles Keck sculpted the statue, which was given to Charlottesville in 1919, according to the Charlottesville Albemarle Convention and Visitors Bureau.

“It was a very offensive statue, and not only did it delineate me as a Native American, it delineated our women and their role in society,”

Yes, PREGNANT Sacagawea should have portrayed as an ass-kicking boss-girl, leading the expedition. Lewis and Clark should have been portrayed as stupid, lazy, and fat racists.

Regards,

Once all the Indian statues and names are not used, the Indians will complain about the lack of Indian statues and names.

Also in mny cases, only a small vocal Indian minority like this complains, the larger majority is fine and happy and proud to have recognition and used in a team name for positive, strong attributes.

I suspect that Rose is dumber than a one-pole travois.

delineate verb

1 : to describe, portray, or set forth with accuracy or in detail

Taking her literally, Rose apparently doesn't want anyone to think of her as a "Native American" or think of her as a woman.

Or is it that Rose doesn't want anyone to think that "Native American" women in general are like Sacajawea. Brave, independent and honorable.

Liberals hate seeing colored people and Indians. No more Sacagawea statues, no Indian girl on the butter packages. No Aunt Jemimah or Uncle Ben on our tables.

I have a lot of respect for Aunt Jemima (pancakes), Uncle Ben (rice), and Rastus (cream of wheat). I always have. They were all real people with interesting stories, and they all were successful in their lives. By all accounts they were nice people.

They should donate the statue to the Lewis and Clark Elementary School in Caroline County. That is the also the the county where Secretariat was born.

Right? Buzz off, Rose. You couldn’t even pass an eight-grade vocabulary test.

Why did anybody respond to that idiot, let alone do her bidding.

Probably the only “Native American” in the entire country that had a problem with that statue.

When “Native American” women act like white liberal women isn’t that cultural appropriation? :)

Rose Ann Abrahamson meets with the Charlottesville City Council in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2019 to call for the removal of what she considered an offensive statue of her ancestor Sacajawea, which stood in a public park in the city for more than 100 years. The statue was removed on July 10.

The link goes to a long and informative article about her and Sacajawea. It also has a larger photo of Abrahamson.
