Trump 'thinks' Zelensky ready to give up Crimea to Russia

US President Donald Trump has said he thinks his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky is willing to give up Crimea to Russia as part of a peace deal - despite Kyiv's previous rejections of any such proposal.

Asked if he thought the Ukrainian president was ready to cede control of its southern peninsula, which was illegally annexed by Russia in 2014, Trump replied: "I think so."

He made the comments to reporters after returning from the Vatican, where he held a brief meeting with Zelensky before Pope Francis's funeral.

Trump said that meeting had "gone well" and that Crimea had been discussed "very briefly".

Ukraine has repeatedly rejected making any territorial concessions, stressing that issues about land should only be discussed once a ceasefire is agreed.

Sometimes you have to cut your losses.

If the two can’t come to an agreement we will have to cut bait.

Zelensky doesn't have to agree to it. USA should recognize Crimea as Russian.

Both sides need to draw a line in the sand and call a ceasefire.

Similar to Korea.

Well, Russia already re- claimed Crimea in 2014. Under Obama/Zelinsky. And they own it now. So there’s that.

No....Ukrainian soldiers gave it to Russia in 2014. The Ukrainian soldiers refused to kill their brothers...They laid down their arms and went home.

Interesting to look back at the press of that time:

Sorry, Ukraine: Obama is not going to defend you from Russia Vox, 3 September 2014

What can Obama do about Russia's invasion of Crimea? 4 March 2014

Obama warns against over-promising on Ukraine response CNN, 27 March 2014

Sanctions then in 2014 and thereafter. Money sent to Ukraine in 2014 and thereafter. Seems there is a theme here...

Putin has said Russia will only end its war in Ukraine if Kyiv surrenders the entirety of four regions claimed by Moscow and abandons its bid to join NATO.

If he doesn’t give it up, Trump needs to just throw his hands up and walk away. I don’t care who it belongs to..

> Crimea is lost <

Right. That’s just reality. And history is full of such instances. Germany won’t be getting East Prussia back. Britain won’t be getting Ireland back. Etc.

Either accept reality or buckle up for a long and bloody war, and one you well might not win.

“crimea is lost”

Correction: “Crimea is lost without WW3” (and then it is lost anyway)

Not only Crimea, but the Kellogg Plan freezes the border at the current front (like in 1953 Korea). So Russia takes 98% of Luhansk, 70% of Donetsk, and 60% of Zaparozha and Kherson.

A Korean-style armistice is probably the best solution, despite Zeepers and Ukrainiacs screaming about Chamberlain. Now to hammer out the observer/peacekeeper composition. A NATO or UN force is unacceptable and won't work. They should probably copy the MFO blueprint on the Sinai peninsula.

Same thing - they knew it didn’t belong to them. Smart move on their part.

Trump is selling a deal that isn’t there. Many in his base want to believe that fantasy that Putin will honor a peace deal.
