NYC librarian quits after endless parade of nude nutjobs, unhinged patrons, and a thug who threatened to ‘cut off her [bleeping] toes’

A Bronx librarian was forced to quit her job because she was traumatized by the unending parade of unhinged patrons — including one who flopped around on the floor naked, another who threatened to “cut off [her] f–king toes,” according to a lawsuit.

Kelly Coffey said her New York Public Library horror story began after she started as a senior librarian in the young-adult sections of the Parkchester branch in November 2022.

An agitated man came in, talking to himself and looking for his phone, according to Coffey and court papers. “He had his hands in his pockets” and suddenly “pulled his hands out and started screaming.”

Coffey — who said she now struggles with anxiety, depression and post traumatic stress disorder — feared the man had a gun...

A security guard, who had allegedly been glued to his phone, ran away along with other staffers, Coffey, 46, claimed.

Then the maniac ripped his clothes off.

“When he got fully naked that’s when I actually” blocked the stairs leading to the children’s area, she said.

The episode lasted about 20 minutes. She was stunned, but for her coworkers “it was just another day at the library and that’s when I really became concerned. I said to them, ‘This is not normal.'”

In a “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” moment in July 2023, a man entered in only his underwear, exposing himself to Coffey and two teenagers.

Coffey repeatedly told supervisors she felt unsafe and questioned a lack of action from security, but was chastised for “escalating” incidents and complaining.

“I was told I’m ’emotionally fragile,’ and I’m ‘too emotional,’ and I’m ‘being dramatic,'” she said.

The constant chaos left her full of “dread and despair” and turned her “dream job … into a nightmare,” she said in the lawsuit.

She lost my sympathy when I read that she was suing.

If every librarian who saw such things had a legitimate lawsuit, the city would go bankrupt.

"Sure, we're too old to change the world, but what about that kid, sitting down, opening a book, right now, in a branch at the local library and finding drawings of pee-pees and wee-wees on the Cat in the Hat and the Five Chinese Brothers? Doesn't HE deserve better?"

That or they'd DO something about vagrants and creeps in the public library.

She has a good case. Security is not doing its job. Apparently it will take a successful lawsuit to change the irresponsibility that’s going on.

Indeed, why is it we have to tolerate this nonsense?

I think it’s instructive to learn, why didn’t we have all these vagrants and deranged people hanging out in libraries in 1960 or 1970? Maybe we could learn something from the past as far as how we dealt with things then.

I don’t support frivolous lawsuits but I believe she may have a point

Hey wait a minute! The guy lost his phone. He's very worried, agitated, muttering to himself ("Where'd the damn thing go?!?") and looking around for the phone, with his hands in his pockets.

He hits a frustration limit, pulls his hands out (probably waves them around) and starts screaming in exasperation.

Hell, I've done that, although not in a public library.

(P.S. I found my phone. I don't know about the library guy.)

I worked in university libraries from 1969-2017.
We coped with a lot but always said we sympathized with the public library people.

There was a stripper who was going to school and always, every day, came into the Reference Room in the morning. She wore variations on a micro-miniskirt and see through mesh front, backless top. My buddy said: “I never, ever was late for work once in those days.”

Another friends I worked with started out at the public library. A homeless man put his pipe in his coat breast pocket as he entered the non-smoking building. It was still hot and set off a flame. Guy didn’t notice.

My friend working the front desk said “Excuse me, sir. I think you’re on fire.” Was used in the top 10 list of their stories to tell for a long time.

Right. I hope she sues, and wins. What she had to deal with was certainly not in her job description.

Lefty politicians don’t care about right or wrong. And they don’t care what good people might have to endure.

But a huge lawsuit just might get their attention.

Yup, she's acting like a lady, a woman who conducts herself as deserving respect. That is the key to the change we have seen. When women used the pill to license promiscuity they lowered themselves giving license to be abused.

librarians are the most leftist critters that occupy the public paycheck. More left than teachers!

She voted for what she has there.

All libraries need to be defunded.

***In a “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”***

Don’t ever remember Librarians having this problem till the movies Titicut Follies and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest caused people to want the mental institutions closed down. When closed down, and crazies released on the streets these things started happening along with mass murders taking off like a rocket.

There was a time in the late 70s when I spent quite a bit of time in the downtown Portland library. The reading room had good chairs, and they left the fiction stacks open for browsing, and it was a place to spend time without spending money (which mattered to me at that time). A few years later, the bums had taken over, passing out in the reading room and infesting the chairs with personal vermin, and urinating (and worse) back in the stacks. The courts had ruled that the bums had a right to be there no matter how they behaved, so the library was helpless.

That was about 40 years ago. I don’t care to imagine what it’s like now.
