Both the commanding officer and command master chief of Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadron 4, based in Virginia Beach, Virginia, were fired on Friday, the Navy announced.
Cmdr. Brett Robblee and Command Master Chief Felix Phillips were relieved “due to a loss of confidence in their ability to perform leadership duties,” a brief Navy news release says.

Re-assigned. Not “fired”. Opportunity for early retirement. They’re as high as they’ll go now.
It should be noted that “fired” doesn’t mean the same thing in the Navy as it does in the private sector.
They won’t be kicked out of the Navy, just reassigned somewhere with more than likely a lot less responsibility.....having said that, it’s not good that this removal will be a permanent part of their military record and I’m sure will affect any future consideration for advancement.

I believe the proper term is not fired, but rather relieved from duty, and most likely demoted in the process.

I don’t wonder at all. Select groups have been getting unfairly promoted for at least a few decades, just to make sure certain stated or unstated quotas or goals were met. I saw long ago that rank or position doesn’t necessarily equate to competence.
