Digital payments network Zelle has shut down its mobile app as of April 1st. This has come as a result of very few customers using the app to make payments, instead using Zelle through their bank or credit union.
As a result of the change, customers of Zelle will now only be able to make payments via a financial institution that offers it. The company was launched in 2017 and is available in over 2,200 U.S. financial institutions.
Although Zelle’s main reason for shutting down its app is because of lack of use, the move could also be seen as an attempt to improve safeguarding and fraud detection within the network, especially since the company has been a prime target for scammers in the past.

I thought it was only through the bank. Who knew there was an app?
A lot of people use that app. In fact, I think my wife ONLY uses the app. I called her a little while ago to tell her the news and informed her about using it through the bank from now on.
fwiw
I’ve never had zelle app on my phone, yet a year ago I had a direct weekend hit on my bank account that offered zelle transfers (unbeknownst to me).
fortunately for me, I had my banker’s personal cell & reported the attempted hack on sunday & the bank had my account locked up prior to opening that monday morning which blocked the zelle transfers.
I had them take zelle off my bank accounts & also closed paypal, too
I have it through by credit union.
One quirk is if you send money to someone who you haven’t sent money to, before, it can “hang” on the transaction and you’ll need to call your bank and get that cleared. Also, there’s a somewhat inconspicuous, kinda greyed-out “Limits ?” on the transfer details screen that — if you catch it — you can click on, and it will tell you what the dollar amount limits are for your transaction.
I never hit limits with PayPal, but they whack ya for 3%, or some such, so... Zelle is the (relatively*) fee-free go-to if you can access it.
* — Your financial institution likely has a limit to the number of free Zelle transactions you can make in a month. Your mileage may vary. Riqsue de choc electrique. Ne pas ouvrir.
There is a workaround on that PayPal fee or at least there used to be. Nowadays, I transfer money via Zelle and use PayPal only for payments.
I have seen this at my bank website but why would I need to use it.
I have Cash App and Venmo. Not sure what to Zelle for???
My bank uses Zelle, but almost nobody I know uses it (Venmo seems to be more common). I use Paypal for direct money transfers — everybody seems to use that at least some of the time.
The banks all need to agree on one app.
Never had that happen. Are you linking your Paypal to a VISA or paying for "same day" (either of which might get treated like a short-term loan)?
“Digital payments network Zelle has shut down its mobile app as of April 1st. This has come as a result of very few customers using the app to make payments, instead using Zelle through their bank”
not me ... i tried using Zelle ONCE ... Chase had been begging people to try out Zelle on their home page for weeks, and i needed to send some money to someone whom i knew quite well and who refused to take paypal ... so i figured, what the heck, chase likes zelle, they’ve made it available to my account, what could possibly go wrong?
well, i TRIED to make the zelle payment and chase instantly locked me out of my online account “due to a suspicious transaction” with no verification option to unlock it ... i was locked out and that was it ... period ... end of story ...
this is an online account i use to access multiple chase bank accounts, credit cards, and debit cards ... it took me two days of frantic calls to various chase departments to get my online account unlocked ... while i was at it, i told them to remove the zelle “service” from my account and never put it back ...
see my post 11 ...
I was talking to a neighbor today. He was scammed out of $20,000 last week from a “bad” cashiers check from a bank on the sale of his car. He said that cashiers checks will no longer be available after April 14.
Yes, the case is under investigation and a license plate has been identified using a Flock camera license plate reader that was installed in the neighborhood several years ago.
Just hoping the car was not stolen, or the plate switched.
Just did a little research after posting the above. Not seeing anything about cashiers' checks, but I see the US Government will stop issuing and accepting paper checks after Sept. 30.
After that you told Zelle to go to Helle...
That’s messed up.
Sadly, it’s a Chase internal handling problem; Zelle shouldn’t take the beating for it.
“Sadly, it’s a Chase internal handling problem”
no doubt ... Chase wasn’t ready for Zelle, regardless of their months’ worth of promos ... still, once bit, twice shy ... i don’t need zelle anyway, working or not ... i sent my friend a USPS money order: if he doesn’t like that, then he can get a paypal account ...
“After that you told Zelle to go to Helle”
hey, you’re a poet and don’t know it!
They have, the big banks own Zelle together
I use check.
Safe.
