Rand Paul’s advice to Trump on tariffs: ‘The more we trade … the less we fight’

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) spoke out against President Trump’s imbalance on tariffs arguing that established levies have kept the world a stable place with a secure market.

“International trade since World War II has made us phenomenally rich. President Trump paints it another way,” Paul said during a Sunday interview with radio host John Catsimatidis on WABC 770 AM’s “The Cats Roundtable.”

“He says, ‘We’ve been taken advantage of.’ But I really strongly disagree because trade has made us so rich and really has made the world a better place. The more we trade … the less we fight.”

Trump made headlines this week as he announced sweeping tariffs on foreign-made cars and auto parts striking counterparts in China, Japan and Canada.

International leaders have promised to hit back with similar trade policies while bracing for the Republican administration’s April 2 date slated for an announcement on reciprocal tariffs.

Paul said his own constituents have opposed the encroaching tariff war citing the threat of skyrocketing prices for business owners and consumers as a reason for angst.

“I live in a state where we have three of the big automobile manufacturers. They’re all opposed to the tariffs, and I think that it would hurt them. The bourbon industry in Kentucky, they don’t like the tariffs,” Paul said.

I would think Rand would like another Toyota plant here in Kentucky. The most popular vehicle in America is the RAV4 which is assembled in Canada. It will soon be assembled in America. Rand is rarely wrong, he is here.

The tariffs are bringing back jobs. Trade has to be fair. I do not agree with Rand on this issue.

People are too used to getting by putting big tariffs on the US. We can do that too.

There is theory and reality. Rand prefers theory and denies the reality of what these tariffs are accomplishing.

Why is he ignoring the countries lowering their tariffs and the trillions of $ in manufacturing investment the mere talk of them is bringing.

Put some glasses on Dr.

BTW, did Rand mention the un Godly foreign tariffs on Kentucky produced articles when sold abroad? When Rand can convince the rest of the world to tariff the way America has previously, Trump’s RECIPROCAL tariffs will no longer be needed.

Rand seems just fine with other countries tariffing us to death. But if we reciprocate then it somehow violates all the rules of his mindless, rigid libertarian ideology.

Hey Rand, how many billion dollar deals have you made? Stick to medicine and leave the financials to Trump.

The motor vehicle industry needs to be financially balanced internationally.

I love Rand but he’s dead wrong on this.

It’s exactly what the Clinton and RINO cabal sold us when they said we “had” to give free trade to China.

In reality, the free traitors just wanted to grift off chinese money like the Biden family.

So Paul thinks the founders are convenient only when their opinions suit him.
Typical shyster politician.

Tariffs are the way the founders envisioned making trade regular. And to fund this government.

Not by stealing from the American people through personal income taxes.

"Rand Paul’s advice to Trump on tariffs: ‘The more we trade … the less we fight’

I can't believe a man as well-educated and well-read as Paul has never heard the terms, "economic warfare," or, "trade war." I would agree that the more we trade on even terms, the less we would fight, but trade on uneven terms only shows weakness and builds enmity which often eventually leads to armed conflict.

I use to believe like Rand
The problem is we have enemies who will gladly trade with us because under their tyranny they can’t make the things we can. It makes their evil stronger.

I would agree unless one side has tariffs or other protections.

Or things like slave labor.

Or one side controls it’s economy top down and is using trade as a means to industrialize and arm itself.

Rand, in a free world, dealing with normal, honest, people is 100% correct.

But that is not the world in which we find ourselves.

We’ve tried it the free traitors way for the last 60+ years, and it’s been an unmitigated disaster. Loss of wages, main street has been devastated, small towns are shells of their former selves. Wages and standard of living declining... all our manufacturing capability is GONE. We don’t even make prescription drugs here anymore.

Yet free traitors will still lie to our faces about how great free trade is. The proof is in the pudding folks. The debate is over.

the ‘elites’ destroy our country, then tell us they “need” to import millions of foreigners (and non-Christians) to replace us for “muh corporation’s cheap labor”
