(The Center Square) – A controversial gun control bill has cleared the Colorado General Assembly and now heads to the governor’s desk to be signed into law.
Senate Bill 25-003, when introduced, initially outright banned the sale or purchase of most semi-automatic rifles or shotguns that take detachable magazines and exempted firearms with “permanently fixed” magazines.
The bill was later amended to allow purchases if an individual secures a “firearms safety course eligibility card” from their local sheriff department and then completes a qualifying firearm education course.
SB 25-003 passed a concurrent vote of 19-15-1 in the upper chamber on Friday after the House passed it with amendments earlier this week.
The bill’s Democratic sponsors argue the legislation is necessary to enforce the state’s 2013 ban on magazines that hold more than 15 rounds. Opponents argue that the legislation amounts to a firearm owner identification card and question its constitutionality.

Most days are “dark” days for Colorado
Ever since the state was infested by refugees from Commiefornia.
I remember when Colorado was a free state. then the liberals from California ruined it.
The Second Amendment does not require permission from the government.
to allow purchases if an individual secures a “firearms safety course eligibility card” from their local sheriff department and then completes a qualifying firearm education course. I did that when I was ten years old.
If I lived there, they could look at my DD214 and shove all that other stuff where the sun doesn’t shine. God Blessed Texas.
Why are my 2nd Amendment rights dependent on taking some class, where if you want an abortion, just just get one?
No judge will stop it.
This is the direction Washington state has been going
The curious thing is, gun violence has increased dramatically.
That’s illegally obtained gun violence. Laws preventing that have been greatly loosened
Is this in the Constitution? Oh, wait, only what the democrats say is in the Constitution is allowed.
But the bill was amended to where the sale and/or purchase of the above is still legal, but the purchaser has to receive a "permit to buy" from the sheriff and the purchaser has to take a firearms class?
Roger that!

Ping
I too took a Hunter Safety class as a young teen. I don’t think it was related to my purchase of a gun.
Here in Washington state they will no doubt pass this permit and training to purchase a firearm. All told they estimate the cost will be about $250. And that permit and training is only good for 5 years. And no exemptions for current or former military.
Gang bangers, if caught with a stolen firearm, will probably still get the overnight stay in jail and released for a trial at some unspecified later date.
There was some guy that carjacked and killed a woman that was caught a few months ago. He had 8 prior felony arrests!
“The curious thing is, gun violence has increased dramatically.”
Crime in Colorado is through the roof. There are so many foreigners here you wonder if it’s the U. S. Bums on every corner too.
“but the purchaser has to receive a “permit to buy” from the sheriff and the purchaser has to take a firearms class?”
It will be struck down.
It happened long before that
