A Delta Airlines plane carrying 136 people nearly collided with a military jet Friday afternoon in a loss-of-separation incident outside the same DC airport where a mid-air collision took the lives of 67 people in January.
Delta Airlines Flight 2983 departed its gate from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport at 2:55 p.m. local time and was cleared for takeoff to Minneapolis-St. Paul around 3:15 p.m
As the commercial plane headed south over the Potomac River, a group of four Northrop T38 Talon jets traveled west toward Arlington National Cemetery for a flyover.
The Airbus A319 and the military jet crossed paths seconds apart, causing an onboard alert to go off inside the Delta flight cockpit.
“On that departure … was there an actual aircraft about 500 ft below us as we came off of DCA,” the commercial pilots asked air traffic controllers, CNN reported, citing audio from LiveATC.net.
“Affirmative,” a controller responded.
The alert received inside the Delta flight deck is called a “resolution advisory,” which warns pilots to make maneuvers to avoid dangerous flight paths.
The warning system is part of the plane’s Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System, the outlet reported.
“Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and people,” a Delta spokesperson said. “That’s why the flight crew followed procedures to maneuver the aircraft as instructed.”
The Minnesota-bound plane was carrying 131 passengers, three flight attendants, and two pilots.
The Air Force jet holds two servicemembers.

…except for DEI of course!!
I will avoid Ronald Reagan airport at all costs now. Not worth it at all.
Next I need to find out what other airports are this dangerous.
Pilot Tucker interviewed said patterns have as little as 75 ft.clearance. That’s not DEI, that’s bad design.
The difference between the Air Force pilots and the Army helicopter pilot is that the T-38 pilots have to be good enough for formation flying.
Somebody from and/or in The SWAMP, has diluted the operational integrity of ATC at the airport.
I noticed this driving across the bridge on the beltway south of the airport years ago how doggone close planes, choppers etc. get.
It all seemed to work but that was before all the psych meds were prescribed and the proliferation of porn etc. etc. booze etc. etc. to distract humanity from reality.
Avoid the airport but understand why you are avoiding it?
DEI plays it role but Conservatives MAGA must admit Drugs, Alcohol and Porn as problems starting with themselves.
Nancy Mace’s House floor video about the spiked adult beverage and her ex-fiance’s dirty videos of her ringing in my head right now.
Its my experience I insist on nothing less.
How many trannies were in the control tower? Should Vance have a beer summit with all the tranny ATCs?
Was just thinking that.
This isn't an airport pattern, which by their nature will be closer than open airspace clearances. The issue here is that the the T-38 apparently passed under the airliner with less than 1000' vertical separation.
The T-38 would have been under ATC control. The airliner would be transitioning from control by the airport tower to ATC.
It is my second most frequently used airport unfortunately IAD Dulles is a mess to walk through or go through TSA and BWI baltimore doesn’t even have rental cars on site - you need to take a 5 minute or more bus ride to get to them.
Possibly, but it's likely simpler and more widespread than that. Air Traffic Controllers, like many professions, are short-staffed. Exacerbating the situation is that controllers don't want to live in high-cost areas such as Washington DC.
They need to ban military flights using DCA. Otherwise, they should shut down DCA as a civilian airport.

NO, we do not. Those are extreme left wing pursuits.
DEI now means DIE
It used to work when Gunnery Sergeant Hartman was in charge...
Ah, thanks for clarifying. She pointed out a number of problems, many due to people in positions they had either bare minimum training for, or just no aptitude for, which could be the case here.
“It’s going to get far worse before it gets better.”
Airline travel is far safer today than was 30+ years ago.
There is a term where something entrenged is impossible to change in bureaucracy. It is the Civil Servant lifers who sit behind the green desks and are living by routine, predictability and habit.
Will we hear more about the fight in the control tower the day before??
