Layoffs Continue at L.A. Times: Cuts Made to Operations, Communications

The Los Angeles Times has delivered another round of layoffs with the outlet’s business side slashed just weeks after 40 newsroom employees accepted buyouts.

The Wrap reports the full count isn’t known, citing Oliver Darcy that dozens of employees across the company’s operations and communications sections were let go this week, including Vice President of Communications Hillary Manning.

Representatives for the Los Angeles Times didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment from TheWrap.

A business needs a purpose in order to exist. What purpose does a printed newspaper provide?

Newspapers long ago forgot what their real business was, it was advertising. The “news” was just content to bring in eyeballs for the ads.

Newspapers like the LA Times are in a death spiral. They should establish a 100% free site on line and sell ads and shut down the printed version for good.

Fire all their “journalist” and rehire them as contractors to be paid by the story. Keep the editors so the stories are readable.

Allow anyone to submit “stories”.

But here is the money maker, open up the comments and allow any and all to comment on the story.

Sort of like what FreeRepublic does.

They are now owned by a conservative who is trying to bring them around to being a fair and balanced provider of news in California. So we should be rooting for their success.

The owner will need to fire every single editor and reporter to even begin the process of liberating the newspaper from leftist propagandists.

Anything else is meaningless happy talk.

your advice across the board is excellent, but this particular comment is at the heart of the matter:

“Newspapers long ago forgot what their real business was, it was advertising. The “news” was just content to bring in eyeballs for the ads.”

exactly ... and not only are newspapers an obsolete way to publish “news” anymore, but at the very same time that newspapers were heading into obsolescence, they simultaneously decided their primary product was no longer publishing “news” to attract revenue, but instead was publishing hard leftist political propaganda, while excluding commentary of interest to conservatives ...

newspapers could not have picked a worse time for this transformation: not only were they losing their “news” appeal to more nimble Internet competitors, but they automatically lost over half of their market appeal simply due to their politics, and then lost even more to the few remaining who simply wanted straight “news” in their newspapers, publishing only “news” that was highly censored and biased if it actually appeared at all any more amongst the plethora of screeching columnists, “opinion” writers, and editorials ...

i’ve been studying the slow motion train wreck of the newspaper industry ever since the Internet took off, wondering when the final crash would be ... it looks like the locomotive has finally picked up steam as the train heads towards the cliff ...

I lost my newspaper job - where I had worked for 23 years - in 2022. I worked for The Baltimore Sun -a left-wing rag that at one time was a sister paper to the LA Times - in the printing plant; my department made the plates for the presses. Management decided it would be paper to produce the paper at a Gannett plant in Delaware. No sob stories, no parties, nothing - my boss shook my hand and wished me well. I was lucky in that I received six months of severance, and I now work for a defense contractor. Life goes on.

Anyone with a functioning brain knows that printed newspapers were and are a dying industry, but that would exclude "journalists". Couple that with their unapologetic activism for "progressive" causes, and it's no wonder they're having layoffs. I wish the owner, Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, a brilliant billionaire, Godspeed, but as long as the employees persist in their pursuit of all things "progressive", he has no recourse than to show them the door. The world needs ditch diggers too.

All of the local papers are behind a paywall. And the paper copy is about $1.50 for day-old stuff. Just for poorly written stories by fresh journalism grads or reprints from national news services.

If traditional print newspapers want to survive they should start a cable YV channel and get paid by Comcast or whichever carrier provides the cable. That way I could skip over that channel as well as the others that we don't watch.

Actually, cable and Comcast are obsolete. There is a much easier and apparently much better way.

Buy a very good microphone and with your laptop, create your own channel on YouTube. You can actually get paid for doing it if you are able to stand out among all the clutter of others.

Here’s a very good and spectacular example. There are tons of others who aggregate news and lack the credentials and message of Victor Davis Hanson. He calls his channel “The Daily Signal”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwZPrgcSRaw&ab_channel=TheDailySignal

I have found my self there every day now

lastly, although I generally avoid them, there are seemingly a lot of black young men operating their own conservative news channels. It’s strange to see the message being delivered by a young black man
