SAN DIEGO (AP) — Lennon Tyler and her German fiancé often took road trips to Mexico when he vacationed in the United States since it was only a day’s drive from her home in Las Vegas, one of the perks of their long-distance relationship.
But things went terribly wrong when they drove back from Tijuana last month.
U.S. border agents handcuffed Tyler, a U.S. citizen, and chained her to a bench, while her fiancé, Lucas Sielaff, was accused of violating the rules of his 90-day U.S. tourist permit, the couple said. Authorities later handcuffed and shackled Sielaff and sent him to a crowded U.S. immigration detention center. He spent 16 days locked up before being allowed to fly home to Germany.
Since President Donald Trump took office, there have been other high-profile incidents of tourists like Sielaff being stopped at U.S. border crossings and held for weeks at U.S. immigration detention facilities before being allowed to fly home at their own expense.
The detentions come amid legal fights over the Trump administration’s arrests and deportations of other foreigners with valid visas and green card holders, including a Palestinian activist who helped organize campus protests of the war in Gaza.
Tyler plans to sue the U.S. government.
Sielaff said he and Tyler are now rethinking plans to hold their wedding in Las Vegas. He suffers nightmares and is considering therapy to cope with the trauma.
“Nobody is safe there anymore to come to America as a tourist,” he said.

"violating the rules of his 90-day U.S. tourist permit"
Sounds like the Rudy Giuliani’s rule punish the person who breaks a window and The chances of them escalating their actions to a more serious infraction decreases.
Don’t ask for facts in evidence...just emote.
You must EMOTE and emote only!
AGAIN the msm Weaves a sob story out of half truths and hear-say.
BTW, while I lived in Japan, even I hated tourists there.
Don’t think too much of them here (lots of wetbacks, believe it or not).
The actual BEST tourists, ARE the Japanese. They respect others, unlike most of the other nationalities.
The only time I can recall being a tourist myself, is for my honeymoon on Saipan (blah), almost 30 years ago.
This is NO different from foreign travel into places like Africa, the middle east, India or the ‘stans, Russia, China, or Australia.
Visas have restrictions, tourists are required to follow the rules.
AP just Trump-bashing - again, often, relentlessly.
Your kind of tourist, yeah. Get the word out.
The British Govt gave colonial administrators a bonus to live in the Virginia colony because the weather was so bad there compared to England.
“Tyler plans to sue the U.S. government. “
I hope they slap her down, after a lengthy and expensive(for her) trial.
This entitled fool thinks we the people should have to shell out, because her kraut boyfriend couldn’t follow the rules.
The judge should fine both of them for wasting valuable resources, in commission of their foolery.
Go get married in Germany. (she won’t)
The AP - any questions?
Every civilized country...including the US and European countries...maintains the right to deny entry to *any* non citizens even if he/she has a visa from that country. In my life I’ve done a fair amount of traveling. I’ve visited First World *and* Third World countries. In that time I’ve never been refused entry into a country or expelled from a country. I was *almost* refused entry to Canada once...and to South Africa once.
365 days a year? You’ve never been to Florida in January, have you?
Oh yea the tip of fla ( about 2% of CONUS ) is good a couple months a year. We are so lucky.
Forgot to mention...if you look at “flightradar24.com” you’ll see that (in winter at least) there are something like a half dozen A380s a day flying people from Japan and South Korea to Hawaii and Guam. And there are at least one or two...if not more...flying people from Europe to Florida and Puerto Rico.
I’m in Michigan. There was this one Wednesday back in August last year that was really nice. =)
The Guam and PR are not a states and they are not in CONUS. Neither is HI.
In VA we get about 8 good days a year. 4 in April and 4 in September. The weather in VA is always “2”. Too hot or too cold.
When I crossed the border into France there were some problems with customs so I took a bottle of Jack Daniels in and between the custom agents wine and my Jack Daniels we had a nice little get together and all got buzzed.
I don’t speak French but worked out whatever the bug was, got a little drunk, and we got on our way.
