Illinois considers new way to fund roads: Charging drivers by the mile

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WTVO) β€” A new proposal in Springfield would change how Illinois funds its roads, by charging drivers by the mile instead of a gas tax.

The proposal, filed by Sen. Ram Villivalam (D-Chicago) and Sen. Christopher Belt (D-East St. Louis), calls for starting a pilot program to study the effectiveness of charging drivers by the mile, something the state is considering due to the prevalence of more fuel-efficient and electric vehicles on Ilinois roadways.

Since fuel-efficient cars use less gasoline, fewer tax dollars will be available for road infrastructure.

Electric vehicle owners currently pay a $100 premium on their annual license plate sticker renewal, to offset losses to Illinois Motor Fuel Tax.

So all the toll roads aren’t bringing in enough money? I despise driving through that state.

George Harrison’s classic Taxman song had

Be thankful I don’t take it all
‘Cause I’m the taxman
Yeah, I’m the taxman
I’ll tax the street
If you try to sit,
I’ll tax your seat
If you get too cold,
I’ll tax the heat
If you take a walk,
I’ll tax your feet

‘Cause I’m the taxman
Yeah, I’m the taxman
Don’t ask me what I want it for
If you don’t want to pay some more.

Subsidize Chicago at the expense of folks living in rural areas where a trip to a supermarket might be a 60 mile drive.

So charged as a tax by the mile, the forlorn Mary Travers in 500 Miles would have been poverty stricken.

Probably just go around from now on. Depends on how much they will be charging.

Wonder how they’ll charge out of state drivers?

This is the real reason electric cars are cheaper to operate. The don’t pay the road tax that is tacked onto a gallon of gasoline.

A tax on miles driven instead of a tax per gallon is not necessary a bad option except, in most places, you’d end up with both.

Wonder how they’ll charge out of state drivers?

Conversely, what will they charge Illinois drivers for miles driven outside the state of Illinois? Is the mileage tax the same for a finely maintained freeway vs a country gravel road?

So every highway, street, alley, rock road, dirt path, driveway, and parking lot would become a toll road.

So how will they monitor how many miles you drive?

License plate cameras at every intersection so they can watch you drive every mile? I see a privacy issue here...
Mandatory vehicle inspections every year so they can read your odometer?

Mandatory access to your car's computer via OnStar or some similar system?

What if your drive takes you to another state? Who gets THAT money?
