Ukraine-U.S. ceasefire talks took 7 hours. The hard part will be getting Russia to agree.

All eyes were on Moscow on Wednesday after American and Ukrainian officials said they would be willing to enforce a 30-day ceasefire in the country's three-year war — and made it clear the ball was in Russia’s court.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is yet to respond to the proposal hashed out by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his Ukrainian counterparts in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday. But some Russian officials and hardline commentators have poured cold water on a plan that, in theory at least, would halt its advances on the battlefield.

Russia’s position would not be determined “abroad due to some agreements or efforts of some parties,” Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said. Rather, she told the state-run Radio Sputnik station, “The establishment of the position of the Russian Federation happens within the Russian Federation.”

No reason for Russia to agree to a cease-fire.

Correction, Russia has all the reasons, but Putin can not. If he fails in his SVO, leaves “annexed” territories under “nazi” control, he is gone.

Russia has encircled 10,000 Ukrainians in kursk. They might wait a week to kill or capture them all before agreeing.

If Putin is truthful, all he wants is a barrier between the West and himself. If he is truthful, I think that is not unreasonable to ask.

No reason not to....it’s a cease fire...not a peace treaty.

I wish someone would explain how this meeting gets that war over and the US out of it which is what I voted for.

We gave Ukraine back what we stopped and all that happened was an agreement for a ceasefire that Russia won’t take because they know Zelensky will use that time to restock.

I may be missing something here, but Rubio says the ball is in Russia’s court. He knows they won’t give up areas they have taken, so this seems a waste of time.

This is not getting us out of it and there are many doubting what is going on.

I hope I am pleasantly surprised soon.

Certainly a precondition to any ceasefire will be the removal of the Green Goblin, either thru elections or one of the other ways the CIA employs.

Putin will counter the offer causing the EU to pee themselves and setting it all back to the beginning.

I love how all these half-baked reporters see themselves as foreign policy gurus. Did anyone think getting Putin on board would be easy?

NBC glides over Trump’s historic win if getting the Ukies to agree to peace.

After having thrashed Trump for trying over the last several months.

Jerks.

ukes aren’t stupid. It would be interesting to see what crazy demands they made in order to agree to a ceasefire framework, juxtaposed against Russia’s ‘counter’.

It’s absurd to expect the advancing side agree to a ceasefire to let the retreating side rearm, reposition, and entrench. Unless terms are favorable to the advancing side.

The southern line of the encirclement is thin and linear. By closing the ends, the hapless Russians are trapped.

If Putin is truthful, all he wants is a barrier between the West and himself.

But that it is not all that he wants. He wants Ukraine. This is clear by what is taught as doctrine in his military academies, by his demands and by his own words. We are fooling ourselves if we think this was just about a threat posed by NATO expansion.

First, I believe Ukraine is pulling out of Kursk oblast of Russia.

Second, Ukraine is reducing the two Russian salients in the Donbas region.

The prospect of a cease fire gives impetus for rationalizing the line.

🍈 but you knew this😂
“SVO” is an abbreviation for the Russian phrase “special military operation” (спецопера́ция), which is the term the Russian government uses to describe its invasion of Ukraine. The term is considered a euphemism to downplay the invasion
