Canada slaps electricity tariffs on New York, Minnesota, Michigan

The government of Ontario is applying a 25 percent surcharge starting Monday on electricity exports to three U.S. states in response to U.S. tariffs on Canada.

This surcharge will affect electricity sales for 1.5 million homes and businesses across Michigan, Minnesota and New York, the Ontario government said. In total, it could cost up to $400,000 per day.

New market rules are going into place requiring Canadian electricity sellers to add a $10 per megawatt-hour surcharge, equivalent to a quarter of the electricity’s average value, to the cost of power for sales to the U.S., according to a statement from Ontario’s Office of the Premier.

The additional charges are a response to 25 percent tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports to the U.S. announced last week by the Trump administration.

I remember just 4 years ago, when Leftist hero Andrew Cuomo, and environmental activist RFK Jr. worked to shut down NY’s Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant, under the pretext of harming the spawning grounds of some fish near the water outlet in the Hudson River.

It provided nearly 50% of downstate NY and NY City’s baseload electricity.

It has been operating for nearly 60 years, without incident, producing electricity for under 3 cents per KWH (whereas NY City residential customers paid 30+ cents)

It would be replaced with “green” renewable energy and also cheap/green power from Quebec.

LOL. You can’t hate Democrats enough

It will hurt those states.

Now slap a like and kind tariff on Canada’s ag products and watch them howl.

As my generation was known to say. Game on.

Michigan voted for Trump, and also voted for every winning candidate since 1976 (true swing state) but conservatives are gaining ground.

The province of Ontario is not Canada.

So Canada lied when they said they would target only RED States... or did they recognize the Communists as the Reds. At any rate, this could not happen to a better group of states... unless you were to include California.

You say, “You pay yours, amd we’ll pay ours.’ A form of capitalism. with “money” the medium of exchanging goods and services. Very straightforward. Buyers and sellers do the haggling, not the governments.

The leftists on those states will teach their brain-dead voters that it’s more reason to go go solar/wind. Never let a crisis go to waste.

I thought you put tariffs on imports. Why would you put tariffs on an export and take a chance on reducing demand?

Those 3 state have a population of 36 million.

Let’s say the number of households is a third of that - 12 million

So if this tariff adds a cost of 400k/day that come to 3 cents per household per day.

I think we can handle it.

Good point....this sounds more like a rate hike to me.....either way it’s meant to punish.
