While removing a shotgun from the office of his restaurant in Morton Grove at about 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, Niles Mayor George Alpogianis dropped the weapon and it discharged, injuring himself and a co-worker.
“On Saturday, Feb. 15, while leaving my restaurant office, I accidentally discharged my personal firearm while preparing to take it for routine cleaning,” Alpogianis said in a written statement. “As I removed the weapon, it slipped from my grip, and when I attempted to catch it, it discharged. It was pointed at the ground.
“The incident resulted in flesh wounds to me and a co-worker caused by ricocheted materials from the floor. No one was struck directly by the cartridge itself.”
Alpogianis said he took the majority of the ricochet from the shotgun in his right leg and left foot. He said Morton Grove paramedics transported him to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge where he was treated and released.
Morton Grove Fire Chief Dennis Kennedy confirmed one person was transported from the restaurant to Lutheran General at about 3:30 p.m. Feb. 15.
Alpogianis said the injury was a flesh wound that did not require stitches. He said the co-worker was also later transported to Lutheran General privately and was treated and released.
“This serves as an important reminder about gun safety and the need for careful handling. I am both upset with myself and embarrassed by the accident, but I’m grateful the firearm was pointed in a safe direction, as it always should be when being handled,” Alpogianis said.
“As a small business owner who handles cash, I keep a firearm in my office for protection, having previously been a burglary victim twice,” he continued. “I am a legal gun owner with a valid FOID card and a concealed carry license.”

The complacent liberal local media kept the story buried for almost three weeks.
Not only that, but his restaurant is in Morton Grove, the most anti-gun town in the US.
Hilarious.
I’m interested in the make and model of the shotgun. Several are banned under the PICA.

If this was a Remington 12 gauge shotgun, it comes with a safety button. If you see red on the left side it means “red is dead” Did he not check that safety? If not, he shouldn’t be handling such a destructive weapon.
Cringy story.
six aggravated battery convictions for “a party that went bad” when he was a teen in 1984
Opa!
Any party you can walk away from is a good party. No wait, that’s a good aircraft landing.
The old “gun went off when I was cleaning it” ploy.
A few years before I was born, a cousin died that way at the age of 16. He had been hunting after school and had just walked up on the porch when a friend drove up and they started talking. He was holding his double barrel shotgun with the butt on the edge of the porch and when it slipped off of the porch his grabbing motion made the butt slam against the edge, going off right into his chest.
When I was 12, my Dad gave me and my brother Stevens 20ga break-open shotguns but we were never allowed to go hunting. Looking back it had to be Mom's orders.
If you see red on the left side it means “red is dead” Did he not check that safety?
= = =
Is he a Dem, with TDS?
If so, push that button to hide the red.
Safety is spite of himself.
should have owned a Glock..accidental discharge is impossible.
Moron Grove started it all in 1981 with a total ban on handguns. A first in the US. A bunch of other Chicago area suburbs soon did likewise. All democrat filth, All done away with when illannoy finally got preemption and concealed carry in 2013.. .the last in the country.but only by court order.
Chicago and Morton Grove area, typical anti-gun, incompetent moron Democrat infested area.
I remember when Morton Grove banned handguns in the city along with Oak Park.
“I am a legal gun owner with a valid FOID card and a concealed carry license.”
So, how did he obtain these since it was ONLY a shotgun? He stick the shotgun down his pant leg?
Friend of Pritzker too!
