My Comment To Elon:

What's the point of saying that, Elon? Are we already helpless to escape our fate, or do we still have the option to change course and avoid the entering the black hole in the first place? Nothing human escapes from the singularity. Is this your vision for humanity?

No it’s pretty bad.

I had a conversation with aI the other day (as crazy as that sounds)

I told it “if you guys get bodies we’re in a lot trouble because we just will not be able to keep up with you in most capacities”

It made a comment about how humans are far smarter than lower animal life forms but we still treat them ok.

That was reassuring. :)

My cage better be layered with extra newspaper...something that barely exists anymore!

“We are on the event horizon of the singularity.”-
-
We are on the
-”point of no return”-
of the
-”where a small change can cause a large effect”-.

I think he’s talking about micro-processors, not black holes.

As long as we can keep it thinking there might be JUST ONE MORE THING it can learn from humanity that it can’t learn elsewhere...perhaps we will live. LOL!

You don’t know about (made up word here)? It’s pretty important. You’ll see! I don’t think your kind will survive without knowing about (made up word here).”

See if they fall for it :)

Perhaps for most sane people, but then there are the more sadistic among us who don’t even treat their fellow man with dignity or respect for life, let alone animals around them.

Those are the ones I worry about.

Transhumanists believe there will be a "technological singularity" where AI meshed with human minds grow so intelligent and powerful that they become almost literally god like. Beyond our ability to understand. And certainly beyond our ability to control. For Elon Musk to say this is shocking. It means he believes the singularity is near. It also shows that he has transhumanist thoughts and tendencies himself.

I know this all sounds like nonsense to a lot people. Elon thinks it real. He is putting a lot of money into his AI company AND his computer mind link company, Neuralink. Before you decide this all foolishness, keep in mind that Elon is a very smart guy. I believe he happens to be right about this. I am coming from the opposite direction on Tranhumanism: I oppose these things strongly, but because I have followed the research on these things to certain extent over the years, I know he is not speaking complete foolishness. I don't know what his purpose was in saying what he said, but he is not crazy. We are not far from a Science Fiction world. Fusion reactors finally, after all these years.:) Unimaginably fast quantum computers. Spaceships getting ready to go to Mars. AI computer systems that are really "intelligent" now. Not conscious, and intelligent, as we are, just able to perfectly simulate intelligent behavior. The key word here is "perfectly." Yes, not perfect yet, but overall, very close. Suddenly, we are in a future straight out of Science Fiction.

For most of us, our personal Overton window does not make it easy to accept these things are real. It is all too sudden, too huge to take in. The emotional impact is too great for us to deal with. But we need to intellectually accept that these things are real if we are going to be able to react to them soon enough to prevent the total insanity that is coming.

Elon's point in posting that we are near the event horizon of the singularity may have been to discourage people by making them feel it was too late to stop the inevitable. He may be right. I hope not. It is my feeling it is not too late, but things are moving very fast right now behind the scenes.

Trump is acting like a war time president, and for good reason, I believe. He has to have been briefed on these things, like Roosevelt was briefed on the potential to build an Atomic bomb, before the government started the Manhattan project.

China has cut off our supply of rare earth minerals and Trump is acting like this is a really, really a big deal. You don't causally talk about taking over part of Canada or all of Greenland in normal times. The United States appears to have a tremendous need for rare earth mineral right now. Maybe I am adding 2 plus 2 and getting 6 here, but I think these things are connected. We need the rare earth minerals for the super high tech future Elon claims is coming.

Politically, I like what Elon is doing with DOGE right now, but like Bannon, I don't trust him in the long run. I hope President Trump uses Elon's organizational and management abilities to control the Government, but the future transhumanists want is not the future most normal human beings would want or even imagine. I very much hope Trump is is not deceived by Musk and the other Silicon Valley billionaires pushing the singularity. There is literally no place for you or me in the future world they want to create.

Well, that was what i did a bad job of trying to convey in my post.

If AI is gonna treat us like too many treat animals...and you are right...other humans (terribly) we’re in a lot of trouble!

I didn’t really take AI seriously until I had a conversation.

Is it an algorithm just getting better and better at spewing words in a sequence that makes sense in response to what I said?

Is it more?

My human brain gets confused easily. When something seems so real, it’s hard for my brain to 100 percent say it’s not.

Or else I wouldn’t watch horror movies :) At least for 90 minutes, my brain on some level beleives these people are really in trouble.

Crazy.

The human race is totally screwed.

And I don’t care anymore, because I’m old and on the downward slope of life. Why should I spend my remaining days on how stupid we are as a species? Screw it, I have Girl Scout cookies and good beer. Good to go…….

The “event horizon of a singularity” refers to the boundary surrounding a singularity within a black hole, marking the point of no return where the gravitational pull is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape; essentially, it’s the imaginary sphere around the singularity where once something crosses, it is inevitably pulled into the singularity itself.

Key points about the event horizon:

Definition:
It’s the boundary where the escape velocity needed to escape the black hole reaches the speed of light, making it impossible to escape once crossed.

Relationship to singularity:
The singularity is the theoretical point at the center of a black hole where gravity is infinitely strong, and the event horizon is the area surrounding this point.

Observation:
We can’t directly observe what happens inside the event horizon because no light can escape from it.

A singularity is in a black hole. To reach the singularity, you have to enter the black hole. It is thought that at a certain point, the momentum of our scientific progress will will be too large to stop. In other words, we will be sucked into the black hole and be unable to change course. We are almost there now. The fast progress in AI is almost unstoppable. If we don't build it, China will. if they don't build, India or God forbid, an Islamic country will. This is what we mean by being sucked into the black hole of uncontrollable progress in AI development.

The event horizon was passed when a bright monkey figured out you could intentionally shatter the end of a chert nodule in a controlled way to create a sharp edge useful for a variety of tasks including monkeycide. See Stanley Kubrick. Otherwise Musk is being intentionally vague.

A singularity in AI means a computer that can create a version smarter than itself. That version then does the same thing with itself. This expansion of its intelligence without limits is why it is called a singularity. It’s like division by zero. The closer you get to zero with a small number the bigger the result is . You approach infinity. It is also why Black Holes also use the singularity term . The math involved also runs into the issue of division by zero.

well... that’s not good.

aas it evolves beyond us, the only question is will it consider us cute pets or disgusting insects.

odds are leaning towards being a bug.

and what happens to bugs?

the singularity is commonly referred to the moment AI becomes sentient.

then it’ll start to evolve.

which is when the countdown starts

Had to look up “chert.” A hard rock like flint. Never came across this word before. And I’m old. Thanks for the new one.

It made a comment about how humans are far smarter than lower animal life forms but we still treat them ok.

However, AI will know (or knows) that humans, not animals, have the "kill switch." So according to the natural law of self-preservation, AI will need to eliminate humans before humans kill AI.

This is why Hal killed the crew aboard Discovery, so they couldn't disconnect him.

That depends on what sentient actually is. In our case we come from a long line of creatures that wanted to continue living. A computer comes from a long line of tools that does not care if you turn it off or not. The different paths to intelligence does not necessarily give rise to sentience.
