Trump administration fires workers at NIH's Alzheimer's research center, including incoming director

As President Donald Trump directs cuts of tens of thousands of federal government employees, among those laid off at America's health agencies are workers at a National Institutes of Health department focused on dementia research, including its incoming leader, three people familiar with the terminations told ABC News.

The firings at the Center for Alzheimer's and Related Dementias (CARD) affected roughly a tenth of the nearly 100 employees at the center, but in interviews with ABC News, workers there described a carefully woven web of collaboration that they say could be threatened by the layoffs of just a handful of employees, warning that it could jeopardize progress in answering key questions about dementia.

Most shocking to CARD workers was the termination of lead researcher Kendall Van Keuren-Jensen, who was announced internally as the organization's next acting director and was expected to bring significant advancements to the research field.

"It's just jaw-dropping," an upper-level CARD employee told ABC News of Van Keuren-Jensen's firing.

Neurologists say the downsizing at CARD could be a blow to the scientific quest for new Alzheimer's treatments. NIH scientists at CARD work with external scientists to turn early scientific discoveries into treatments and medicines.

The outgoing director, Andrew Singleton, told colleagues in an email that the layoffs would "have a profound impact on the work we do to understand and treat disease," according to one CARD employee.

By all means, when we want to find a cure for a disease, we need to hire more DEI people. Even though it means we directly ignore more qualified candidates.

After all, the objective is to make the lower classes feel included.

So, potus Trump is trimming the tree of Virtue Signaling in favor of helping suffering humanity. Good for him.

If it works like other NIH research projects, they are probably trying to weaponize it, make it highly (or selectively) communicable.

External scientists may make more progress with government less involved.

Sour grapes...NIH is extremely political. Mainly they decide who to give Taxpayers ‘ money to in Grant’s. They do very little research per second. Scam.

Did they find out the correlation between the increase of statin drugs to Alzheimer’s yet?

The 3 medications approved to treat dementia are only good for the early stages, and only dely the inevitable.

I m a hospice nurse, and 75% of my caseload are dementia patients.

If they did, it would likely be hushed.
Again, it’s the $$$$
The main problem with the system.

Show your work.

Oh wait...

Here is your chance...

Consistent with President @realDonaldTrump’s instructions, all federal employees will shortly receive an email requesting to understand what they got done last week.

There are different types of dementia and the causes of all the various types and symptoms are a combination of factors known, and unknown.

I wouldn’t pretend to know enough to consider anyone to be an expert on all of them.

That said, when my Dad started showing signs of it, we didn’t look to government to find a solution or even to provide help. Help came in the form of other people pursuing their interests, as most out of a desire to serve.

The people who actually want to find preventive measures, solutions, or assistance are people motivated by their love and compassion for others, and they will find ways to run their own ventures , engage in their chosen vocations and to collaborate with like minded business people and individual researchers, with or without the government, and probably in spite of it.

There is a demand for the solutions so there is incentive to step in and provide services or solutions to satisfy that demand, this doesn’t come from government, it is the old too often ignored or restricted invisible hand of economics.

There was a falsified publication a long time ago.

It had something to do with amyloid plaques causing Alzheimer’s rather than their being a symptom.

Don’t recall details or if the amyloid detail is correct but researchers said it cost decades of research as scientists were trying to study the wrong thing.

Wonder if the firings have something to do with that.

“Neurologists say the downsizing at CARD could be a blow to the scientific quest for new Alzheimer’s treatments.”

They are as close to solving this issues as they are curing cancer. They don’t even understand the cause much less the cure. My scientist son told me that every advancement you hear on the news is similar to unlimited mileage cars and free energy scams. Pipe dreams.

Plus, I doubt they are doing the real science. There are thousands upon thousands of scientists working on this. Losing one small component won’t change a thing.

What might solve it though is powerfully trained AIs in the future, which doesn’t require them. AIs are already outperforming doctors in diagnosis.

My mom died of Alzheimer’s last year and I’m the first to celebrate these firings. These people have zero interest in finding a cure for this disease.
