Charles Barkley is no stranger to blaming President Trump for everything, but now the former NBA star is blaming the president for Team USA’s loss to Canada.
Canada defeated the U.S. 3-2 in the 4 Nations Face-Off championship game on Thursday night in Boston. The win was extra bitter for the Americans, considering they had just beaten the Canadians 3-1 on Saturday night in Montreal.
One of the many subplots to the game was President Trump’s joking suggestion that Canada become the “51st state.” In addition, Canadians had been booing the U.S. anthem due to the “51st state” comment and the president’s threat of tariffs.
Soon after the game ended, Barkley told Inside the NBA viewers on TNT that the Canadians were motivated by Trump’s actions.

How come hockey players have speech impediments?

I've worked at length in Canada. Canadians carry an outsized opinion of themselves in the world, largelely due to their 1944 performance at Juno Beach in Normandy. They are very touchy about how we don't take them seriously.
Hence, the Canadians and their inferiority trip will provoke a grudge about what Trump said. It was a stupid way to get them to step up to helping manage North American defense against terrorism, human and drug trafficking, and illegal migration. It would have been more productive directing his jabs at Trudeau and the Liberal Party, such as, "Maybe they'll sell us Alberta. We could make it a State. Heck at this point, they probably want that!" That would have stung properly, and pointed out the shabby way Albertans have been treated by Trudeau.
We don’t want or need them either
History will record that Trump offered to incorporate Canada into the US. Not unexpectly they declined. Now history will ultimately demonstrate how good or bad that decision turns out for the people north of the American border.
And give Canada all the grief you want, but on the international stage their hockey teams have some major intangible qualities — a combination of national pride, a business-like approach to the game, and relentless intensity — that seem to be the deciding factor in so many big games.
So done with sports of any kind.
Last night reminded us why hockey means so much to Canadians — it’s in our blood, our hearts, our history.
No matter what corner of the country you tuned in from, we all cheered as one. Proud of this team. Proud of Canada.— Justin Trudeau (@JustinTrudeau) February 21, 2025
Come on Chuck. Can’t you take a joke? Americans don’t want them as a 51st either. It would mess up the stars on our flag.
Oh, so now liberals like hockey? I thought it was “too white”, and they preferred Soccer and Basketball.
I’m not surprised that Canadians don’t like us. Canada is our worst enemy. We have fought six wars with Canada, more than we have with any other country. Of course, in four of those wars, We were English and Canada was French.
Yeah, and the American players probably don’t want Canada as a 51st state either. Hence...
Already forgotten. When they are down to rooting for Canada in Hockey, it's pretty bad for Democrats.
I agree, I don’t want them to be either. They are not worthy of it.
Didn’t know they were playing for pinks.
Lose this game and Lose your Country.
Unfortunately it means we’re still stuck with Justin Bieber.
That’s stupid even for Charles.
By that ridiculous notion, Canada wanted to be the 51st state since they lost to us in Canada 3 to 1.
Who cares?
It was a close game. Canadians will be begging to join the US sooner or later.
If US forces trade balance and tariff reciprocity CA will be in a lot of trouble. Also, they need to increase defense spending by 3.5 times to meet the NATO 5% target. So there is no way CA can afford to be in a trade war with the US and beef up their defense.
Also, US will not let them cozy up to China so it doesn’t look good for CA.
