High school carpentry students in western North Carolina building tiny homes for storm victims

BURNSVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) -- When you walk into the construction training facility at Mountain Heritage High School in Burnsville, it looks and sounds like any other carpentry class -- until you realize what the students there are actually working on.

"It makes me feel very proud knowing that I am able to help and change someone's life that is in need through not only school but building and just helping out those that can't really help themselves," said Croix Silver, a senior at the high school.

Silver and classmate Hensley England are both seniors in Jeremy Dotts' honors carpentry class and part of a new initiative aimed at helping their hometown get back on its feet in the wake of Hurricane Helene.

"I just wanted to go out and help others and this a great opportunity to do that," England said.

One of their projects this semester is turning the wooden frame at the center of the workshop into a "tiny home" for a Yancey County storm victim who lost their home in the storm. It's all part of a new partnership between the high school and Rebuilding Hollers, a local organization started by Stephanie Johnson after the storm.

Yes it is a great project in many respects.

But the fact they are doing it because FEMA spent their wad on illegal invaders is something that really ticks me off. FEMA is another one of those useless outfits that simply need to go down the toilet.

I can’t wait until all the corrupted managers in DC are prosecuted. There should be Nuremberg style trials with the perps in orange jump suits with an armed guard standing by each one. Heads shaved, no shoes, chains on their ankles and handcuffed. Bread and water for breakfast, lunch and dinner. And a hole in the floor for a toilet. With plenty of cockroaches and rats in their cages to catch for snacks.

Seriously, these FEMA commies are such low lifes they don’t even deserve that. Putting up criminals in plush hotels, giving them spending money, helping them cross the border while genuine tax paying citizens in NC suffer. It’s beyond criminal.

This natural disaster and the ineptness of fedgov will only serve to embolden the spirit that engendered our founding principles and subsequent legal code.

Words on paper? Oaths of office and the Constitution. Why not anything more? Answer me.

Same here. And not only did FEMA redirect funds meant to assist FEMA victims, they actively sabotaged and thwarted the attempts of private organizations that did try to help. Only now, since Trump was inaugurated, are many of those communities getting the help they need. However, it is too late for many such as the ones that froze to death when the sub-freezing winter weather arrived, or those that were forced into selling their land. There are bureaucrats that should be jailed.

These teens who are building tiny homes are learning many lessons that will assist them in the future, and not only lessons in a building trade.

And this is the kind of crap we deal with in my county

Their new mobile home, purchased after the hurricane wiped out their original one, is TOO SMALL for the property.

You all do realize this is exactly what the left wanted to do to us, right? Tiny houses, 15 minute cities, etc.

Just sayin’ it outloud.

While used as a temporary measure is fine and to be applauded, let’s be cognizant of some perhaps underlying issues.

There’s a local story in Citrus County, Florida.
Couple lost their home, got a replacement mobile home 450 sq ft.
County would allow, permit denied. Parcel requires minimum 600 sq ft.

I don’t know about TIny Houses—Starter homes are in great need for young couples. Not only that, but downsizin seniors are also candidates for Tiny Home living.

Not for everyone of course, but if it works for someone, then it works. 650 sqft is small, but not tiny...more like a single wide mobile home. 12x54

We have a cottage that size. Two bedrooms, a bath, kitchen, and living/dining room.

That’s not micro, but more than adequate.

Unbelievable. Utterly without empathy or compassion. I despise bureaucrats.

Is the state now going to condemn the tiny small houses as being not up to code like the state did for the Amish built houses?

One or two people can live in an 8x30-36 camper/travel trailer having kitchen/dining area, bath, bedroom, and typical conversation area with convertible couch, chair(s) and TV stand.

Just as much space as some efficiency aparyments.

And it certainly is vastly preferable to a tent.

I doubt there will be prosecutions of the many who are very much deserving of prosecution but if there are no prosecutions then it is guaranteed that it won’t take many years for the corruption to be again rife. Prosecute the miscreants and shut down entirely most of the departments and agencies by whatever terminology they are called. I would even support using damaging on the Sens and Reps to induce them to vote for the eliminating of those agencies.
