For far too long the United States has minted pennies which literally cost us more than 2 cents. This is so wasteful! I have instructed my Secretary of the US Treasury to stop producing new pennies. Let's rip the waste out of our great nations budget, even if it's a penny at a time.
Can’t agree with that.
I said earlier that Trump was signing executive orders during halftime 🤣
A penny saved is a penny earned.
Why? A penny for your thoughts...
I would like to see President Trump order the Treasury to start printing $500 and $1000 bills again.
They were stopped by an EO from President Nixon, as I recall.
A $500 bill today is worth less than a $100 bill was worth when Nixon made the EO.
I LIKE pennies.
I’ll stoop over to pick-up a penny on the ground for exactly that reason.
Make them out of steel.....
Why not? Trump has good sense/cents.
I take all pennies I receive in change, put them in a container that holds hundreds, and run through machine at my local store when container is full, get a slip saying how much I can buy there.
I would bet that the number of pennies produced to date would more than satisfy our penny needs.
Just for context in 1857 the US stopped making the half cent coin. In today’s dollars a half cent is worth around 18 cents.
We lost our pennies in Canada, in ‘12. Our smallest coin is the nickel. When cash is used, you round to the nearest 5¢. Transactions tend to balance out, with the GST included. Electronic transactions DO transact to the cent.
This will be interesting. I don’t care one way or another, but it’ll be fun to see the uproar from coin collectors, Americana enthusiasts, financial folks, and all the hubbub that will come from it.
I’m not sure how this will affect commerce though. Does it mean all prices need to be rounded to the nearest 5 cents? Will the existing pennies last long enough to support the current pricing structure we use in 1/100 of a dollar?
This will be fun to follow, but basically won’t have any real impact on anything except cause some confusion for a while.
I’ve got 6 of those.
It does not affect me at all. I have not used pennies, nickels, half dollar and dollar coins since 1995. It is all credit cards for me. I do use quarters to use shopping carts at Aldi grocery store.
Finally!
They're zinc now, with a copper wash.
Uh, they were zinc now.
