Egg-flation leaves NYC eateries scrambling as costs quadruple: ‘I can’t keep this up’

Egg-flation is getting the Big Apple scrambled.

The price of eggs is so clucking ridiculous that New York City’s food carts, bodegas and delis are charging more for the iconic — and usually affordable — bacon, egg and cheese sandwich.

Cafe Manhattan in Midtown put up signs last week declaring all egg sandwiches will have a $.50 surcharge — and its manager Gin Yun told The Post he still can’t make ends meet because he’s shelling out four times more than just a few months ago to buy cartons.

“Oh my God, the price of eggs has gone crazy,” Yun said. “I can’t keep this up, I’m serious. I haven’t made profit for the last two months.

Government killed off the chickens because one got the flu..

This. Slaughtering a hundred million laying hens over the chicken sniffles is why eggs are so expensive right now.

No other country manages bird flu the way we do, FWIW. And eggs are cheap everywhere else.

This is a lie.

I paid WAY TOO MUCH....41 cents an egg for the past several months.

Lowest 37 cents.

Under first Trump adm...11 cents.

BUT, today they are 44 cents.

They were 41 cents average the past month.

44 cents today.

I have no “in” person at FRESH giving me a discount :)

A few months ago...I was paying 37 cents.

I’m paying about 15 percent more.

That’s nowhere NEAR 300 or 400 percent

Call up the Easter Bunny.
He MUST have a solution to this egg dilemma.
How about an Easter egg hunt with a bounty on found eggs?

Between the 2 goats and 12 or so chickens we have I spend about $75 a month on feed. Yesterday I got 9 eggs, and am getting anywhere from 4-9 eggs a day now depending on the weather. So I haven’t noticed any of this!!

“ Oh my God, the price of eggs has gone crazy,” Yun said. “I can’t keep this up, I’m serious. I haven’t made profit for the last two months.”

If your profitability is balanced on the food costs of one ingredient, I’d say your business model is questionable.

I recall my nine chickens were fed about 1/4 lb of feed per bird per day and they were pastured during the day. They’d lay on average 6 days per week in Florida.

about $40-$50 max a month just for the chickens. We share them with family and friends when we get to many. Store bought eggs have ZERO flavor and there just is No Comparison in the quality and taste of fresh eggs.

According to the UN’ Food and Agricultural Organization... 202 million chickens are slaughtered every day, which is roughly 140,000 chickens per minute... Even with culls associated with bird-flu outbreaks... There are lots and lots and lots of chickens out there... And plenty of eggs as well.

The one legacy of Covid that we will be living with for decades to come.... The acceptance of price gouging for no reason other than greed. Eggs aren’t the only grocery item being price gouged and supermarkets collude to ensure it continues... In Canada they discovered that all the major grocery retailers were inflating the price of bread for over a decade... When caught, they paid out hundreds of millions in class action lawsuits, and made hundreds of millions more in profits. So even before Covid grocery stores were inflating food prices... Since Covid, the gouging is even more pronounced.
