Democratic Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro on Friday slammed animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) over its petition to replace Punxsutawney Phil, a groundhog, with a cake.
The famous rodent is the star of the annual Groundhog Day event held in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Superstition about the event claims Punxsutawney Phil can predict the early arrival of spring if he does not see his own shadow when emerging from his burrow.
PETA last week issued a statement, however, calling on Punxsutawney Groundhog Club President Tom Dunkel to do away with the groundhog, arguing his life is “no piece of cake.”
“Retire Phil to a reputable sanctuary with his family, and every year we’ll provide a giant vegan ‘Weather Reveal’ cake (it would be the first in the world this year) to share with revelers at Gobbler’s Knob,” the group wrote. “If the inside of the cake is blue, there will be six more weeks of winter. If it’s pink, there will be an early spring. This would allow you to still make tourism dough while showing Phil a slice of decency.”
The proposed "Weather Reveal" cake is a similar concept to that of gender reveal cakes, which expecting parents use to reveal the gender of their baby.

“If you don’t like this idea, the icing on the cake is that we have another offer,” PETA continued. “We’d be happy to send you a large thermometer for Gobbler’s Knob instead that reads, ‘If it’s still cold, it’s still winter,’ which would aptly represent the absurdity of the current form of this tired old spectacle.”
Gov. Shapiro responded to the offer via X with a challenge to PETA.
Come and take it,” he wrote.
Reacting to the challenge was Independent Women’s Forum Center for Energy and Conservation Director Gabriella Hoffman.
“I agree with Governor Shapiro on something,” she wrote. “PETA is terrible.”
PETA in 2024 also called to replace Phil with a giant coin. Additionally, the group in 2022 advocated to swap the groundhog for persimmon seeds. Comment bubble

I’ve always seen PETA as a sort of dumb idea machine.
Governor Shapiro trying to have a Sista Soulja moment?
I’m a second-hand vegetarian.
In 2023, the PETA shelter took in 3,117 dogs and cats and took the lives of 2,471 of those pets. That’s a save rate of less than 21%. Really? 79% of the animals they took in were beyond medical or behavioral intervention? When you compare that with the more than 62% of all shelters in the United States that are at or above the no-kill threshold of 90%, it’s understandable why PETA is aggressively defensive when it comes to no-kill, but the question remains … why?
PETA engages in no activity that actually benefits the welfare of beasts. For example, there are no PETA shelters for dogs and/or cats.
If cause of death gets changed officially, that could re-toll the statute of limitations for a wrongful death lawsuit against her fiancé, whose family had all types of high level connections in the PA political and legal establishments...including a certain former attorney general whose office sat on the case for years, before quietly sending it back to Chester county due to a potential, unstated "conflict of interest."
This is nothing but a triangulation play and part of Shapiro’s 28 run. Probably a set up.

I’m a devout animal rights guy but I don’t support PETA because I’ve never seen any definitive accountability regarding how its charitable income is used to ensure the ethical treatment of animals.
No animals should ever be mistreated, tortured or allowed to starve.
What exactly has PETA ever done to ensure these things never happen?
All I’ve ever seen them do is make stupid press releases about renaming sports teams, Not using names of animals in advertising and just plain being a nuisance............
DNC front group?
NED???!!!!!
Yep
