The Dane County Sheriff's Office is withdrawing from the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program that relies on information about undocumented immigrants in jail.
In an exclusive one-on-one, News 3’s Meryl Hubbard spoke with Sheriff Kalvin Barrette to learn more about what this change means for the county.
“At this point, we will no longer be taking part in the SCAAP grant program, and it is due to the recent change in administration and our understanding, listening, and hearing our community here in Dane County,” said Sheriff Kalvin Barrett.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the SCAAP program provides federal payments to agencies for incarcerating "criminal aliens with at least one felony or two misdemeanor convictions for violations of state or local law, and incarcerated for at least 4 consecutive days during the reporting period.”
"We receive grant funding for providing a separate organization with historical data… From that, they have the opportunity to share that information with other federal agencies, including ICE,” said Sheriff Barrett.
Sheriff Barrett says he has been in support of this grant until Trump’s administration took charge.
"It's a different time. I think that, you know, the previous administration is completely different than our current administration, and we have to be able to continue to represent the values of our community," said Sheriff Barret.
He says the average amount of money his agency got from the program was $80,000 to $90,000 per month. This was later verified by the Dane County Sherrif's Office as the average amount per year.
"That money went towards the general fund for the entire county to use, not just the Dane County Sheriff's Office," said Sheriff Barret. “We want to make sure victims and survivors of crime don't have any barriers in front of them.”
He says cutting ties with the program is aimed at helping Dane County’s immigrant community feel safe.
"My main message to our immigrant community as a whole is that we are here for you. We understand the pain and the confusion that's been taking place over the past several weeks, and know that the Dane County Sheriff's Office is here to support you,” said Sheriff Barrett.

How wonderful that the Dane County Sheriff is so supportive of of violent illegal alien felons, just what I would want a sheriff that puts the feelings and well being of illegal alien criminals over the American citizens and legal residents. Oh Mr. Sheriff, to you recall your oath of office, the one where you swore to uphold and defend the Constitution from all enemies foreign and domestic? You just became a domestic enemy of the Constitution.

Committee documents say the redirected funding would help pay for a new county attorney to “increase capacity on housing activities” and for Spanish language interpretation and translation services in the county’s Department of Human Services.
Makes one wonder how many of these ‘LEO’ Supervisors have been bought and paid for by the Cartels, doesn’t it?
I wonder if he isn’t refusing the money to make a point. shifting blame to the county. He is playing the long game?
Lots of sheriffs go that route. Out here in CaCaLand they have final authority to grant carry licenses. They only give them to celebrities and their security.
Basically, pay to play.

What other grants can we start looking at? It would be a damn shame if you suddenly can’t buy the toys your department wants.
He started as an appointment by the Governor (D) and was later elected in 2022 over a pasty ‘white guy’ who is tough on crime. Overwhelmingly - like 76% of the vote! Dane County residents ARE that stupid. And the last really good Sheriff they had was also a pasty white guy; he retired and Gov. Evers appointed Barrett.
“See, we could take the cash when we knew the Feds weren’t really going to do anything. But now, well, we don’t want to help them enforce the law in any way so we’re going to bow out.”
