Retail giant swats back at a conservative activist group

...

In a steady parade of companies retreating from their diversity efforts, Costco Wholesale is standing out by holding fast.

Ahead of its annual meeting next week, the warehouse retailer has urged its shareholders to reject a proposal

....

Major companies from McDonald’s to Meta Platforms have faced pressure to reconsider diversity, equity and inclusion policies. That pressure has been amplified by anti-DEI boycott threats and ...

In Costco’s case, a conservative activist group is pushing the company to compile a report on the risks posed by its initiatives. “It’s clear that DEI holds litigation, reputational and financial risks to the company,”

...

Now Costco is part of an increasingly small club of companies touting the benefits of DEI policies. Walmart, Tractor Supply, Ford Motor and Deere are just some of the companies that have backed away from diversity efforts in recent months.

...

conservative activists encouraged followers to boycott the retailer, but they acknowledged Costco’s loyal following. That group includes the social-media agitator Robby Starbuck, who has pushed other companies to disavow some of their DEI, environmental and LGBTQ-community-support policies.

“They are not the worst of the worst, so they weren’t my focus,” said Starbuck. He added that it would take more than a shareholder proposal to spur change at Costco and that he might target the company in the future. “You better have your ducks in a row before you go after a beloved company,”

...

Costco’s founders and many of its top executives donate to Democratic politicians

...

Costco links a portion of executive bonuses to social objectives including DEI metrics .. has a chief diversity officer, a role that a number of companies—such as Meta last week—have decided to eliminate.

I’ve noticed that Costco often charges more than Sams for many items - one of them being ground beef.

Costco’s founders and many of its top executives donate to Democratic politicians

I would be surprised if they didn't.

Definitely for the last 20 years, the Democratic Party was the ruling party in the American Government.

The last Republican that CEOs felt comfortable donating to was George W. Bush.

Since then, it appeared that all of them became Democrats.

Really well-run company. Compare to those rolling back DEI, Boeing and Nissan, two outfits circling the drain.

While the 14th amendment’s equal protection clause may only actually apply to government actions, I wonder if anyone has taken a close look at various equal opportunity employment laws to see how they might affect DEI type policies.

I know that you know that that is not true.

I haven’t set foot in one since 2020 when, in strict obeyance of their 100% mask policy, I refused to remove my full-head latex T-Rex mask for an ID card update photo.

We shopped at Costco yesterday for an engagement party last night for our son and his fiancé. The store was mobbed, but everything really runs smoothly. We inadvertently lined up at a checkout line that was marked “Closed,” but the checkout woman graciously let us join her line. She was very friendly. I’m always impressed with the efficiency of the operation. I don’t believe any of the people there are hired only because they are minorities, incompetent, lazy or incapable of working elsewhere.

I’ve heard good things about their hot dogs, but they would be tough to eat through a mask. They probably had the food court closed anyway.

Instead of the focus on being anti-DIE we need to focus on “Merit is everything” and “be your best”. Amd just emphasize that DIE means DIE or Don’t instill excellence.
