A new broadband law is going into effect this week in New York state requiring internet provider to offer low-income residents access to monthly broadband rates of $15 for 25Mbps or $20 for 200Mbps. As a response, AT&T has decided that it no longer plans to offer its 5G home internet in the Empire State and will begin notifying users about the decision on Wednesday.
"While we are committed to providing reliable and affordable internet service to customers across the country, New York's broadband law imposes harmful rate regulations that make it uneconomical for AT&T to invest in and expand our broadband infrastructure in the state," the company said in a statement provided to CNET.
"As a result, effective Jan. 15, 2025, we will no longer be able to offer AT&T Internet Air, our fixed-wireless internet service, to New York customers."

Good time to go back to rotary.
True, but internet providers in America are not innocent good guy capitalists. In general we have the slowest and most expensive internet on earth.
Just as with health-insurance, woke politicians and central-planning bureaucrats will create a hairball of expensive regulations which will raise costs and lawfare - and then leftists will whine about suppliers being “greedy”
And all of these rules and regulations are part of the problem.
Government inflicted “wireless internet desert”. It is good to see companies say “No!”
Hochul is crushing competition with her marxist mandates, they really are stupid.
AT&T proves in business it is not survival of the fittest.
It is so ironic that AT&T is railing against what is likely a stupid and unwise law, when it has done EVERYTHING possible to get stupid and unwise laws passed that FAVOR them.
Former Illinois House Speaker Madigan is on trial for taking bribes from AT&T who has already plead out to paying them.
In the past I have been an apologist for Comcast, but they have gone completely off the rails. I don’t even want to bother to go into the details in this post. I am sorry for any market where people are left with only one choice when it comes to internet service providers.
The government always screws up everything when they ham handedly start imposing price controls in any market. My wife and I live in an outlying area where wireless internet provided by cell towers has not worked well for us in the past.
Yes, but the gov’t in NY just took away one of your choices. So, your choice was pay the market price in NY or do without. Now your choice is no 5G internet service or no 5G internet service.
more companies need to do this....
With subsidized healthcare and internet, why should anybody work anymore?
they are. Just look at ins companies in california and florida
Just wait until the “Winter Eviction Moratorium” goes through. Banning landlords from evicting tenants no matter what from November through the end of March. Small landlords (including yours truly) will sell out, rents will double and triple as grifting tenants will move in, then stop paying rent for 5 months. By the time they are evicted another 2-3 months of no rent will have been paid.
This in addition to “Good Cause” which is absolutely ludicrous as well as the Tish James/Andrew Cuomo “Housing Stability and Tenant Protection Act of 2019” which basically takes away 2/3rds of private property rights.
Leftist definition of “Profit”: GREED.
Yeah, I add a layer to that. Big tech is sodomizing American consumers and no, it is not that they are forced to. In many cities they get a monopoly or near monopoly.
The slightest pro-consumer law gets passed, and they pull out of the market completely ... and the goal is to get normies to say exactly what you just did.
It’s specious to clamor for the abusive big tech offering, because we might not get that if we make them mad. We are not offered a market rate, we are offered an exorbitant rate that they can offer because they are protected from competition in most municipalities.
All companies should pull out of NY and CA and then watch the fun.
Oligarchs definition of “profit”: Sodomizing American consumers with government protection from competition.
Wait!
I once read about this in a book.
All new york has to do now is to say AT&T can’t refuse to provide service.
