The Department of Homeland Security on Friday announced it would extend Temporary Protected Status for immigrants from Venezuela, El Salvador, Ukraine and Sudan for 18 months.
Why it matters: The extensions protect immigrants before the start of the incoming administration, as President-elect Trump has promised hardline immigration policies and threatened ending TPS.
Trump tried to end TPS designations for several countries during his first term. Zoom in: About 600,000 Venezuelan beneficiaries, who arrived in the U.S. on or before July 31, 2023, can reenroll to retain their status through Oct. 2, 2026.
The extension was "warranted based on the severe humanitarian emergency the country continues to face due to political and economic crises under the inhumane Maduro regime," the Department of Homeland Security said in a news release.
By the numbers: About 1,900 Sudanese nationals can re-enroll on the basis of ongoing armed conflict and human rights abuses.
About 103,700 Ukrainian beneficiaries can re-enroll due to Russia's war on Ukraine, which the DHS called a "humanitarian crisis."
About 232,000 Salvadorian beneficiaries can re-enroll for TPS because of an extension for geological and weather events. The protection was previously set to end on March 10, a couple months after Trump took office. The end date is now Sept. 9, 2026.
State of play: TPS shields immigrants who entered the U.S. without authorization or overstayed visas. Only people from certain countries qualify.

They’ve got 10 days. GO!
4 of the most violent countries on the planet
And none reknowned for human rights
El Salvador??? Are the ‘geological and weather events’ referring to Hurricane Mitch?
I’ve not been to El Salvador but from news I’ve read it has had a significant crime rate reduction due to the current admin.
Apparently we do almost everything by executive order these days, so Trump can just write his own and override it. Piss be upon Joetato and his handlers.
If these were peaceful societies, why would special asylum be necessary
El Salvador: MS-13
OK, just add another EO on 1/20/2025 that unprotects them ...
I’m not convinced it is.

For starters. Perhaps just a dream but if congress wants to go away from a decades long GOPe to the GOP/MAGA then pass a profoundly simple bill that will pass the senate and head to President Trump’s desk.
Man.
Talk about four places whew we don’t want people from!
It’s now the 8th safest nation on earth.
President Bukele really cleaned things up.
Trump can rescind it all. These bitches are pissing into the ocean.
But I would add investigations and prosecutions for everyone involved in trying to f*** with the President and by extension, the American people who want him to *STOP* the migrants from coming in.
Venezuela: Tren de Aragua
When Trump takes office, subpoena a Biden ask simply ask if he remembers doing this. Doesn’t really matter what this is. He didn’t do it. He won’t remember. It’s not a valid Presidential decision.
I am tired at his staff screwing the country.
Sending all their MS-13 gangsters to the US certainly helped.
NONE of this is coming from CONGRESS-—
IT is inside DHS only. MAYORKAS NEEDS A JAIL CELL
MAYORKAS, IMO.
Haitians in Springfield Ohio are given “humanitarian parolee” status, eligible for all social service benefits. Thousands are on SSI some up to $2100/month. (Good thing it only lasts 7 years.Maybe the time should be shortened. That money is of great benefit to the Springfield community. (Doesn’t hurt that the Mayor has multi family housing covered by taxpayers, too).
President Trump will reverse this post haste. Get ‘em out of here!
