No, the L.A. fires are not the wrath of God. What that biblical comparison says about our politics
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | January 9, 2024 | Justin Ray

…The argument, in short, was that California’s progressive values, particularly its embrace of LGBTQ+ rights and the protection of women’s rights, had angered God, and in response, He was punishing the state with fire.

The comparison immediately struck me as absurd, not only because of its unsubstantiated religious implications but because it ignored the complex reality of wildfires, especially in a state like California. But more importantly, it made me wonder: If California’s progressive stances really had invited divine wrath, what about the conservative states that were also suffering from natural disasters? After all, hurricanes like Helene and Milton had devastated Georgia, North Carolina and Florida — and the Sunshine State is often held up as a conservative stronghold.

It’s part of the smear campaign that paints California as being godless due to its progressive values; it’s a refrain that continues to surface, often accompanied by thinly veiled currents of Christian nationalism. The implication is that California, with its liberal policies and cultural acceptance of diversity, is morally bankrupt and in need of correction. This kind of thinking has been pushed by some conservative groups for years, and while it may seem like a fringe perspective, it is part of a larger, more troubling trend of religious dogma informing public discourse in ways that seek to eschew pluralism and democracy.

But California, for all its problems — homelessness, water scarcity, wildfires — remains one of the most successful and innovative places in the United States. As Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office points out, only a handful of nations have a larger economy than California.

What we should fear is the complacency that allows issues like climate change to go unaddressed while we’re distracted by political and religious rhetoric that divides us.

I don’t believe God’s Wrath is behind every tragedy hitting a blue area. But I don’t doubt that it is a real possibility.

When extreme left - which is pretty atheistic - writes a piece like this, it suggests that THEY may be looking over their shoulder.

How would a godless communist know?

God is probably not be actively wrathful, but He is allowing people to experience the consequences of the choices they made.

California disregarded consequences and papered them over until they couldn’t be papered and now Californians are getting the consequences that have accumulated over 40 years.

What’s happening in California’s fire season is similar to what would happen if “Tornado Alley” went from 150 tornados a year to 250 per year, and most of them were F5’s.

Even people here won’t continue to scoff at “climate change” much longer. Their insurance companies are already changing policy limits and underwriting standards, whether you read the inserts in your policy bills or not.

God views California as infinitely more vile than Sodom and Gomorrah. More earthquakes, fires, and floods are headed California's way. God will crush California, and grind it into dust.

Exactly what is author Justin Ray’s basis to presume to speak for God? Ray states others cannot speak or represent God’s actions or intentions, but Ray does exactly this.

Whether it was God’s wrath or not, it was outrageous, maybe even criminal neglect. Articles like this just want to take the focus off of the mismanagement and malpractice.

After all, hurricanes like Helene and Milton had devastated Georgia, North Carolina and Florida — and the Sunshine State is often held up as a conservative stronghold.

Big difference. These states have not made deliberate purposeful plans to allow hurricanes to destroy people and property.

California on the other hand does everything it can do to ensure death and destruction.

Yes, this is their well-worn tactic of trying to marginalize and dismiss any who correctly call out the criminally incompetent malfeasance of all the Democrats responsible for this tragedy.

My takeaway is take nothing in life for granted. Everything you have, including the very breath you take is given by God, and can be taken away in a heartbeat. So, be thankful, and don’t forget.

Justin Ray - “I know! Let’s turn Gavin Newsome, Karen Bass and all the others who failed to do their jobs into victims of far right religious zealots. That should do the trick!”

'God views California as infinitely more vile than Sodom and Gomorrah.'

I have to question the mental stability of someone who presumes to have an inside track on God's Mind with regard to a State made up of 40+ million *individuals*.

That emoticon. Is that your surprised, I didn’t know that face?

Or do you disbelieve what I wrote and agree that Newsom and Bass really didn’t cut budgets, hire lesbians, reduce water supplies, blame conservatives and allow flammable undergrowth to flourish? And these criminal actions are just the tip of the iceberg in describing the deliberate means they are using to destroy California.
