Trump’s 5% NATO Goal 'Unrealistic' - German Vice Chancellor

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - German Vice Chancellor and Economy Minister Robert Habeck called US President-elect Donald Trump's demand that NATO allies increase their defense spending to 5% of gross domestic product unrealistic, in an interview out on Thursday.

"What Donald Trump is proposing is unrealistic. We will not end up with 5%," Habeck told the Funke media group.

The Greens minister called for increasing defense spending to 3.5% of GDP, stressing that the increase would be temporary.

"3.5% is roughly what is currently being discussed in NATO as a medium-term goal... If we ensure a reasonable level of security for Germany in a few years we will be able to reduce spending again," Habeck said.

Yes, it is realistic, it’s just that the Euros have to give up on their socialism to do it.

Time for the U.S. to exit NATO and to let it fight for itself. I’m tired of the grifting eurotrash elites ripping us off.

Yeah, I suspect that Europe would have to spend more than five percent if the U.S. left NATO.

If the krauts don’t want to pay their share, we should pull our troops out of Germany. If they still don’t pay up we should let NATO fend for themselves, and get out.

The need for NATO completely evaporated with the fall of the Berlin Wall.

When he realizes they have too little ordnance, too late, he'll immediately turn into a Nazi.Putin knows this, thats why Putin calls the EU "Nazis."

The U.S. defense budget is about 3.5% of GDP.

Is Trump going to propose it be increased to 5%, an increase of hundreds of billions??? Impossible unless they first, or also, enact hundreds of billions of deep budget cuts in other areas.

The funny part, is that they really don’t have to. There are no external threats to the EU besides mass immigration.
All they need to do is stop being domineering A-holes.

Europe should be prohibited from having anything more than a small constabulary force mostly geared towards disasters, a coastal patrol and supporting cargo planes and helicopters for both.
No subs, no artillery, no fighter planes, no tanks.

Yeah 31/2% is something they can do someday maybe. Time to leave.

Bullshit. All the wars with Russia for at least 170 years or so back to the Crimean War have been Euros marching EAST.

Russia has no desire to conquer Europe. I cannot see evidence that they ever did. But whatever keeps the arms industry running I guess.

We don’t need NATO. In fact, it’s an unnecessary fiscal burden. We don’t need the United Nations. Lots of things we could expel/eliminate and we’d be much better off.
