Biden Signs Law to Increase Social Security Benefits for Millions
The Epoch Times ^ | 01/05/2025 | Joseph Lord

For supporters, the law finally removes limits imposed on benefits for public servants. Critics say it would speed up the Social Security program’s insolvency.

President Joe Biden on Jan. 5 signed into law a bill that would increase Social Security benefits for millions of Americans who have worked in eligible public service fields.

The bill, dubbed the Social Security Fairness Act, specifically boosts benefits for around 3 million Americans who have worked in public jobs, particularly affecting those who received state and local pensions separate from Social Security.

“By signing this bill, we’re extending Social Security benefits for millions of teachers, nurses and other public employees and their spouses and survivors,” Biden said at the signing of the bill on Jan. 5.

In an email to The Epoch Times, a White House official said Biden’s signing of the legislation made him “the first president in twenty years to expand Social Security benefits.”

The official fit the bill into Biden’s larger commitment to Social Security. Both Biden and President-elect Donald Trump have repeatedly expressed support for Social Security and opposition to substantial revisions that reduce benefits or raise the retirement age.

The legislation passed the House on Nov. 12 with overwhelming bipartisan support in a 327–75 vote. Later, it passed the Senate in a similarly bipartisan 76–20 vote. Even Republicans, who are more hawkish on government spending and Social Security issues, largely supported the bill.

Public sector employees generally receive superior benefits to private sector employees of the same pay grade and far superior retirement options.

Absolutely ridiculous and a total waste of dollars. This on top of the fact that the SSA is paying people who aren’t even eligible for Social Security payments through a change in circumstances, such as being able to return to work.

If their deductions are the same as anyone else’s, their benefits should be the same. The extravagance of some public service pensions is indeed an issue, but a separate one.

Actually, this one is named correctly. I am acquainted with a number of people it affects.

Just a mere fraction of what the yearly cost is for financing illegal aliens—nine billion dollar a year as opposed to hundreds of billions for the illegal.

Full disclosure, I will benefit from this law. I collect a state teacher pension. But before I taught, I worked at other jobs long enough to qualify for Social Security. The size of my SS check is cut roughly in half from what it should be because I draw a state pension.

Cutting my earned SS benefit doesn’t seem all that fair to me. But that’s just me.

Now, to be honest, this will possibly get me a ‘windfall’ of $100 a month.

The second part of the bill affects a couple of widows I know, who have been up to now, unable to get S.S. benefits from their late husband’s account.

I’ve been retired from my job with NY State for the past 21 years. If this Bill deals with Social Security offset, NY State has already resolved that issue for its employees many years ago. The State Legislature passed a Bill to end Social Security offset for State employees, so I don’t understand why other State governments couldn’t deal with this, and why the Federal Government got involved.

If a person works for 20 years in the private sector and pays into Social Security and then works 20 years in a Federal job, they only get a Federal pension. They don’t get a Social Security payment even after paying into Social Security for years. This bill is an attempt to correct that.

Could we have a break?

Biden is THE person to blame for people paying taxes on social security. Not only is it money for which taxes have already been paid, it is not income. It is the government giving back the money they confiscated

It was Senator Biden who introduced and pushed taxing social security’income’

Everyone needs to stop

NONE of these people ever paid a single red cent into SS.

AND they are being paid by their state/municipality for their retirement.

I don’t think this bill affects many Federal workers unless they are old timers who are on the pre 1983 pension system. Since that time Federal workers get a small pension, their Thrift Savings account income and Social Security. This seems to mostly affect state and local government employees who migh have much larger pensions.
