Speaker Johnson prevails in a nail-biter

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) on Friday defied his most conservative critics to retain his gavel in the next Congress, overcoming threats from a group of far-right lawmakers leery of his leadership record and commitment to spending cuts.

The victory puts Johnson in the driver’s seat of the lower chamber just as President-elect Trump is poised to return to the White House for a second term, lending Republicans control of all levers of power in Washington for at least the next two years.

It didn’t come easy.

Johnson was initially on a path to lose the first round when three Republicans voted on Friday to elevate other figures to the Speakership post — two more detractors than Johnson could afford given the Republicans’ hairline majority. The math changed only when two of those Republicans flipped their votes — a shift that came with a nudge from Trump, who called in amid the long vote to lobby for Johnson.

The messy process grants Johnson the leadership seat he was after, but also forecasts challenges ahead as the Speaker seeks to unify the Republicans’ restive conference behind Trump’s ambitious legislative agenda beginning in the early months of 2025.

I understand and agree with the disappointment with Johnson. But I am glad for the quickie vote. A long-protracted vote to oust, would have held up the Trump agenda. Hopefully Johnson, seeing how Trump helped him, will get on board the Trump Train.

Ah, it seems like even when we pick someone who we think is hardcore conservative, they change once theyget the position they wanted.

So better off just getting it though fast, like you said, and working with him

I wonder if he spied on the trump team in Fl and reported back to his bosses the Dem writing that Omnibus nightmare .

The reason this and every move conservatives want to make in Congress and Senate is because after Trump won in November, the D's kept on counting in every close congressional district. Republicans did not fight back. The result is close margins on every legislative vote for the next 2 years, at least. A few Cheneys or Kinzingers or Romneys can spoil a lot of good work.

Like ‘fixing’ the debt ceiling ? If it doesn’t come with 2.5 trillion in spending cuts I’m out.

So glad to see that Johnson regained his position. No reason that he shouldn’t have. Nothing to be gained by voting in a Democrat & I don’t mean to be demeaning to Jeffries.

Media and Dems got snookered. They never dreamed he would get it on the first ballot. They could have just let the time run out...with no change...and go for a second round.

In other words....

Nice play!!!!

I fear you are right.

But the Trump lawyers should’ve kept an eye on GOP House and Senate races, and not just Trump’s performance.

Donald Trump wouldn’t win a vote for the House Speaker post. Most Republicans in Congress represent districts where the voters are far from “MAGA” on many issues even if they did vote for Trump three times.
