Author and Marine veteran Philip Klay on Thursday expressed concern about the role that Trump Defense Secretary nominee Pete Hegseth played in lobbying him to pardon war criminals during his first term in office.

Writing in the New York Times, Klay highlights Hegseth's efforts on behalf of 1st Lt. Clint Lorance, a convicted war criminal whom Trump pardoned in 2019.

I came across this while scanning the news online. Did a cursory search on Free Republic but did not find it posted. I posted this as to get Freepers take on this hit piece.

Correct me if I am wrong, but if if 1st. Lt Lorance was pardoned, then he is no longer a "convicted war criminal." Am I right or wrong on that?

Every veteran of WW2 would Elbe a “war criminal” if they were held to today’s standards.

I agree with you.

According to Stephen Ambrose, he wrote in his book Citizen Soldier, that near the end of WW II in Germany, if our soldiers passed through a town and nothing happened, they would continue to pass through. But if they came across a town and were fired upon, they would raze the town to the ground. I suppose today they would be tried as war criminals.

In 2008 Obama changed the “Rules of Engagement” that severely restricted a soldiers right to return fire. At the same time, the suicide rate in the military doubled.

This was caused by the soldier’s frustration to protect themselves and each other.

Many men were wrongly prosecuted for violating Obama’s directive. In the frustration of feeling betrayed by the government they thought was supporting them, they took their own life as they felt abandoned, wrongly prosecuted, and hopeless.

Think about the Allan West situation and how wrong that went until he got congress to support him.

Remember his phrase “I would walk through hell carrying a gas can to protect my men.”

Such as :

...The new evidence implicating the Afghan military-aged-males to attacks on US and other terror targets during the relevant timeframe all but confirms hostile intent and hostile activities. The evidence underscores the validity of the split-second decision to fire at the three riders. This is especially so where it is beyond any doubt that moments and meters later, Afghan military-aged-males associated with the three riders (as shown in Appendix A) were scouting 1st platoon for an attack. And, the two Afghan military-aged-males detained shortly after the second engagement each had HME on their hands. This is reasonable doubt. But, the larger point is the prosecution had this evidence available and did not disclose it....

This is no different than the UK imprisoning citizens for reporting rape gangs while doing nothing about the rape gangs.

We will not tolerate this type of heavy hand to come down on our soldiers while turning a blind eye to ISIS in New Orleans.

Do you notice the left is more outraged that Trump linked New Orleans to the border than they are about the actual terrorist attack?

Yes, and Phil Klay has won awards for writing fiction. He teaches fiction now. Anything he says should be viewed as fiction unless there are cold, hard, facts.

He is Obama’s boy, and will say anything to keep the fiction going.

Sounds like an author who wants his book to sell, who knows that the side of tolerance, diversity and inclusion would get him blacklisted if he DIDN’T echo their Orange Man bad mantra.

In 2008 Obama changed the “Rules of Engagement” that severely restricted a soldiers right to return fire.

As I recall, they could not return fire, unless one soldier was hit and the troop legal gave them permission. They could not fire on men dressed in burkas, even if they were seen carrying weapons.

Not sure. While I appreciate your thoughts, my first logical response is to note that the propaganda wing of the enemy is putting this out. Yes i wrote enemy and by that i mean Uni Party in DC and their swamp allies. My thoughts immediately go to the terrorism this past week, and the FBI and how they have chosen to handle the situations in NO and Vegas. I come away with such fear for our population that President Trump’s picks for his cabinet are far better than previously thought and need 100% fast confirmation.

The Uni Party Rinos, need to read the room and either immediately leave the GOP officially or embrace the America First Agenda.
