Gaetz declares ‘resistance is now futile’ after Donald Trump endorses Mike Johnson for speaker — but Massie, others remain unmoved

Former firebrand Rep. Matt Gaetz, who instigated the House GOP toppling of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy last year, declared that resistance to House Speaker Mike Johnson “is now futile” in the wake of President-elect Donald Trump’s endorsement.

But that and Trump’s endorsement did nothing to pacify Johnson’s most outspoken House critic, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), who had come out in opposition to his speakership bid.

“I respect and support President Trump, but his endorsement of Mike Johnson is going to work out about as well as his endorsement of Speaker Paul Ryan,” Massie replied on X, posting an image of an article detailing Trump’s past support for former House GOP leader Ryan.

“We’ve seen Johnson partner with the democrats to send money to Ukraine, authorize spying on Americans, and blow the budget.”

Trump wants to make deals, not burn it down.

Massie might want to start preparing his resume. He’s a rep...not the lone ranger.

Agree - if Massie cannot control himself, he’ll soon find himself on CNN, next to Cheney.

I completely agree. The Left is using these side issues to divide us.

Stay on course, and resolve executive branch items:

1) Slash federal government spending and influence.

2) Clean up federal law enforcement.

3) Close the border, and begin aggressive deportations.

4) End the war in Ukraine.

5) Enact tariffs as needed to have fair international trade.

Forgive me if I’ve forgotten any.

Endorsing Johnson was the sensible thing to do. Don’t let the left divide us. We have a real shot to improve things and crush the left.

Ouch. but true.

Massie is a lone voice in a small congressional faction. His political position depends on him being a contrarian - and speaking the truth.

Jeremiah was ignored by the Israelis, but he was still a prophet.

at the same time, I appreciate that Trump actually has to govern.

The Speaker problem needs to be settled or there won’t be an inauguration. For the H1B, I’m starting to think it’s a diversion to keep the media focused on that topic, so as to be able slip-in his nominees, given that the Senate convenes in 4 days and can immediately start confirming his nominees.

A diversion is the only thing that makes any sense to me as Trump, full-well, understands the H1B issue and had his people KEEP SILENT on it until just now (and of course through the campaign). They brought it up now for a reason...and getting his nominees through the Senate would be a damn good reason.

Trump acts from the gut. This is not him, this is his advisors stepping in...

I also agree, now’s not the time for public infighting...BUT the degree to which Johnson thwarts Trump’s efforts in all those areas is the the degree to which he will turn out to have been right.

Oh please. Who’d he supposed to replace him with? It’s a group of corrupt nincompoops with a steady 17% approval rating, not for nothing, who carry out insider trading like they’re going to the mailbox

They inflicted term limits on the presidency and not themselves. The just voted in a 30% pay raise for themselves

One is worse Than the next

Jim Jordan? ALL TALK
Matt Gaetz?

He has a point. Johnson needs to make some promises on some key issues and get Massie's support in return.

I think it’s safe to say that Dems wanting thwart Trumps’ various initiatives will focus their efforts on weak Republicans. This has to be anticipated. That’s gotta be 100 times easier than actually standing up for something.

"We've seen Johnson partner with the democrats to send money to Ukraine, authorize spying on Americans, and blow the budget."

Democrats and plenty of Republicans, too -- including my own allegedly conservative Congressman.

If H1B is a diversion it was started by Vivek and Elon. Elon said expand to infinity, obvious pushback came, and the reaction from the tech oligarchs was you’re a bunch of dumb racists. Total leftist reaction, even including an Elon temper tantrum. It should never be forgotten, especially considering they’ll have an advisory role.
