As Mexico braces for the return of President-elect Donald Trump, Mexican officials wonder if Trump's threats of military action against the drug cartels will become a reality, The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.

According to former Defense Secretary Mark Esper's memoir, Trump had floated the idea of using the military to get rid of drug labs owned by cartels during his first administration but was ultimately talked out of it. This time, Mexican officials are cautious of Trump’s plans resurfacing.

Mexico’s new president, Claudia Sheinbaum, quickly shot down the idea of U.S. military assault.“There won’t be an invasion,” Sheinbaum said at a recent news conference. “It’s not going to happen.”

“Is the Mexican president more afraid of losing the bribes the government is receiving form the cartel or the level of corruption that will be exposed?”

Those are not mutually exclusive options.

She and her government apparently cannot control those cartels.

Or are they being bribed by the cartels?

Yup. The government of Mexico seems concerned that the criminals in Mexico may be dealt with. Kind of lets everyone know that the criminals in Mexico ARE the government of Mexico.

If we shut down drug production in Mexico, my bet is it moves to the US. The real problem is the users; i.e., “We have met the enemy had he is us.”

Or, the cartels have her family members as hostages.

Either way, tough. Mexico is no better than Iraq or Aphgan. in allowing terrorist cells to operate in their country against their neighbors.

The cartels are allowing her to be president. If she were to speak out against the cartels she would no longer be.....!

What causes a person to imbibe daily a substance that makes them hunch over, shiver, and drool like zombies? Does it feel that good?

January 17th is my birthday. I will consider Trump’s inauguration a very nice birthday present.

We should not have any more Indentured Servants in Americs. It’s a Land of Liberty, not a Land of Indentured Servants. The only Servants we should have are the volunteers for public service. And most federal positions, besides officers & enlisted, should be unpaid volunteers.

I think we could break the cartels by effectively sealing the border and bringing back long sentences for possession of whatever drugs the cartels are selling. The cartels exist because we are an enormous market for what they sell.

Remember, PDJT is a Transactionalist. This is simply a negotiating tactic. If they don’t want him to do that, then do it themselves.

when the real drug problem is the user and the drug of choice is deadly then the very best way to end the problem is legalization. simple.

They are part of the cartel. At every level of government they are on the take and protecting the cartels or they are silent about the cartels or they are killed. To defeat the cartel, the Mexican government would have to be taken down and replaced. Corruption is in the soul of Mexico.
