Speaker Johnson’s next job is tamping down a bubbling GOP revolt against him
The Washington Times ^ | Monday, December 23, 2024 | Alex Miller and Lindsey McPherson

House Speaker Mike Johnson will have to work the phones over the holidays in a bid to avoid losing the gavel in January after some hard-right lawmakers denounced his handling of recent spending negotiations.

Mr. Johnson, Louisiana Republican, is in hot water with at least a handful of Republicans who could block his reelection to speaker on Jan. 3 by voting for another candidate.

The move could leave the speaker’s chair empty for days or more as House Republicans search for a replacement who can win nearly every vote in a razor-thin GOP majority. It would prevent the House from conducting legislative business or swearing in new members and could even interfere with the Jan. 6 certification of President-elect Donald Trump’s election to a second term.

Some Republican lawmakers say they are fed up with Mr. Johnson over his failure to secure spending and other policy reforms in must-pass funding legislation negotiated with Democrats. Meanwhile, Mr. Trump is angry that Mr. Johnson did not force a provision into the recently passed government funding bill to delay the expiration of the nation’s borrowing limit until halfway through his term.

“We have a lot of our colleagues that are losing confidence,” Rep. Cory Mills, Florida Republican, said. “We’re not sticking to the principles and the values in which we say that we fight for.”

One GOP lawmaker, Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, declared he is a firm “no” on the vote for Mr. Johnson’s reelection.

Thanks to the GOP’s bare majority, a loss of even one more Republican would keep Mr. Johnson from winning a second term in the speaker’s chair.

Why do some Republicans insist on being just plain stupid.

Do you believe Gaetz was wrong for holding McCarthy to his word?

Does the GOP have another spineless Rep to elect?

Motion to vacate required only 1 vote when Gaetz removed McCarthy.

Rules were changed, but they are not horrible. It’s now 9. That’s actually excellent. No more ignoring the conference and passing bills with Dem votes. Speaker chair can be vacated with only 9 votes.

There is no merit in smooth operation of the Swamp. Don’t imagine that this sort of thing is the GOP hurting itself.

The GOPe will be hurt by this, but not the GOP.

The hardliners are never going to be happy with anyone who isn’t a hardliner, and that’s just not going to happen because the RINOS will not vote for a hardliner. For now, Johnson, imperfect as he is, will have to do, unless the LORD has other plans. Massie and the other hardliners will wind up getting us Jeffries if they aren’t careful. Don’t forget, we don’t have a full complement of republicans right now, with one of them being in a nursing home. You can bet pelosi will show up to vote! When will republicans learn to stick together like democrats do? You never see them fighting amongst each other. But if I were Johnson, I’d take this as a warning.

Should have his PR staff work on a makeover.

Ruffled hair like Rand Paul.
Work out and then show off a buff six pack like RFK,Jr.

Go to clubs and have viral videos of the young crowd forming a circle to watch him make his confident moves to cutting edge dances or even country ones.

Some Republican lawmakers say they are fed up with Mr. Johnson over his failure to secure spending and other policy reforms in must-pass funding legislation negotiated with Democrats.

Instead of blaming Johnson, why don’t they blame the dozens of Republican Congressmen who are fully on board with these massive spending and debt packages?

I have yet to see anyone mention the name of a Republican who can allegedly accomplish all the things as House Speaker that Johnson (and McCarthy before him) have failed to do.

Keep Johnson in at least until Jan 21st. A Speaker of the House is needed to swear the new president in.
After that, let changes begin.

Both the House and Senate are in recess...and the new Congress will be sworn in on Jan 3rd.

In other words....there's not a damn thing to vote on until the next Congress is in Session....AND...there is legislation pending.

Motion to vacate required only 1 vote when Gaetz removed McCarthy.

The motion to vacate rule was changed TO 1 in a compromise to allow McCarthy to become Speaker, so they handed him the rope he hanged himself with.

There is no reason to have Johnson as speaker, except if it is not him I wouldn’t be a bit surprised to see four anti-Trump “Republicans x join the Democrats to vote for Jefferies or even Pelosi as speaker. Yes, they are that treacherous and hateful of President Trump and us.

Hey, has anyone told them we are a representative republic?

The citizens representing each of us want him gone. Close the subject.

RINOS will not vote for a hardliner

Why call Republicans RINOS?

RINO is simply a term to used to pretend these people belong to some other party, when they're in fact Republicans.

Why are Democrat leftist in the Republican party?

That’s true, but I got the impression that an active Speaker would be needed somewhere in the process before the chief justice gave his ceremonial approval.

Is the term “RINO” meant to convey that many of these Republicans are not conservative?

I think we all know that some Republicans are not as conservative as others.

They are Republicans because they say they are Republicans.

Is there any litmus test on any issue to determine if someone is really a Republican?
