Amazon workers go on strike in US ahead of Christmas rush as union seeks contract talks

(Reuters) - Amazon.com workers at seven U.S. facilities walked off the job early on Thursday during the holiday shopping rush, aiming to pressure the retailer into contract talks with their union.

Warehouse workers in cities including New York, Atlanta and San Francisco are taking part in the "largest" strike against Amazon, said the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, which represents about 10,000 workers at 10 of the firm's facilities.

"If your package is delayed during the holidays, you can blame Amazon's insatiable greed," Teamsters' General President Sean O'Brien said late on Wednesday.

Amazon said it does not expect any impact to its operations. The union has "intentionally misled the public" and "threatened, intimidated and attempted to coerce" employees and third-party drivers to join them, a company spokesperson said.

Unionized facilities account for just 1% of Amazon's hourly workforce and areas such as New York City have multiple warehouses and smaller delivery depots, which could help Amazon blunt any potential strike impact.

The greedy grinch union thugs. Damn unions. The most worthless “workers” in the U.S. Six days to Christmas and the greedy thugs are telling Americans to kiss their greedy asses. Nice.

Do part-time workers need a union?

“If your package is delayed during the holidays, you can blame Amazon’s insatiable greed,” Teamsters’ General President Sean O’Brien said late on Wednesday.

SO, let me get this straight, Mr. O’Brien. You really don’t seek to cut the ‘greed’, but rather demand a share of the spoils?
OK...got it.

Just checked my packages:

Arriving via UPS Surepost a day early from Amazon.

This strike was not a surprise it seems.

Perhaps the Teamsters are extra brazen after Sean O'Brien spoke during the GOP convention this year.

The average pay for Amazon customer fulfillment and operations roles is currently over $22 per hour, and average total compensation is more than $29 per hour when including the value of their elected benefits. Depending on the position and location in the U.S., employees can earn between $18.50 and $29.50 per hour.

Everything you should know about Amazon’s hourly wage and benefits offerings for fulfillment employees

This strike was not a surprise it seems.

Suspect this strike was a topic covered during the Bezos/Trump/Musk dinner meeting at Mar-A-Lago last night.

Jeff Bezos and Trump had dinner at Mar-a-Lago, and were joined by Elon Musk

Amazon packages arrive via Amazon delivery, UPS and USPS. Amazon delivery has its bases covered. Apparently, Amazon has alternate options to work around the employees on strike at the seven fulfillment centers.

it’s 1 percent.

I’ll just go somewhere else and never come back because there are lots of places now

I have routine items ordered via the Amazon Subscribe & Save program. Only one of five items has shipped, with scheduled delivery tomorrow, December 20. Pretty sure they will be delayed. Fortunately, they are staple items rather than time sensitive deliveries.

Nobody needs unions any more now that there are statutes to protect workers, statutes that govern worker hours, worker safety, worker pay and so on and so forth. There was a time when perhaps unions were arguably relevant, although to be fair, no one is a slave, there are always other jobs if a worker is unhappy with his job, it is just a job, the worker is not a slave and may find a job more to his liking.

So basically, unions are just a criminal enterprise. Extortion racket.

Very true. My Dad told his employees that if they ever decide they wanted to bring in a union rep and try to vote to go union he would just shut the plant down and they’d all be out of a job. He was a good owner and boss and he believed in treating his employees fairly and felt unions were corrupt.

The strike is in limited locations. Teamsters don’t represent most Amazon workers.

The gambit is an attempt to make it seem that Teamsters represent Amazon workers

Amazon says the strike will not actually affect operations
